NOT TRULY SUCCESSFUL.
t OCKEFELLER HAS given some
wC very trite advice about what
men should do to succeed. But
when did John D. Rockefeller be
come an authority upon the subject
of success of success In Its real full
meaning? His advice as to money
making would doubtless be worth
having, provided It could be shown
conclusively that he was giving dis
interested advice.
But as a model of the really suc
cessful man Rockefeller cannot be
accepted. He has amassed millions
it Is true and he is a most important
figure In the financial world. But
his work has all been of a selfish
nature, and It has all been along one
line the extending of monopolies so
as to gather more gold. Ho has
never truly served his country or his
fellow men. On the contrary he has
taken hundreds of millions of dol
lars that should have been divided
among them. The worst of it all Is
that Rockefeller never earned his
money oven by conducting or estab
lishing Industries for the benefit of
mankind as some wealthy men have
done. He has made most of his
money by financial manipulations
and by extending the most hated of
all monopolies, the oil trust. He and
nls associates are now engaged in
corrallng the water powers of the
nation so as to further add to their
wealth.
It Is true Rockefeller has given
much money for supposed benefl
dent purposes. Yet his gifts to char
ity have been of such a nature as to
rouse resentment. He lias given
money to some educational Institu
tions, but it Is noted that the schools
he has been most generous with
smack of tho donor's Influence. This
Is something fair minded men do not
like they llko to know that the
fountain of learning Is not contami
nated. Rockefeller's advice that a man
should seek to do more than earn
money sounds strange. He himself
is tho most conspicuous example in
the world of tho money seeking man.
His ndvlco that a man should not
obtain wealth by "hook or by crook"
seems hypocritical. If the public did
not know of tho past nnd present
methods of Standard oil such advice
would havo moro weight.
John D. Rockofoller Is not really
a successful man when gauged by
tho proper standards. His life has
been n failure for It has been ouo of
solflshness and greed. His Is not tho
all around, woll balanced character
of tho really successful man. That
he takes but ono day's vacation a
year shows tho fact. If he were a
truly balancod man ho would want
more holidays and he would enjoy
thorn.
Rockofoller is n striking example
of tlie man who believes "money is
everything." Throughout his llfo ho
.has worshiped Mammon and lu his
egotism ho doubtloss believes ho has
succeeded well. But many men who
are wiser than ho, though thoy have
not his wealth, do not envy or ad
mlro him. On the contrary they
pity his stato .for they regard him as
being much llko Midas of old sur
rounded with gold but unable to en
joy It.
