Educational Work Here.
SALEM, Ore., Aug. 31. The
Oregon Statesman prints the follow
ing: ,,
"SuperintJbndent of public instruc
tion, J. II. Ackerman, who hastJust
returned from Coquille, Coos cojnty,
where he attended the teachers' in
stitute and board of directors meet
ing reports that the schools of Coos
county are in a very flourishing con
dition. "Superintendent Ackerman says
that Coos county stands at the head
of the state In the manner of advan
cement of her school system and that
outside of Portland the high schools
of that county lead the state.
"Mnrshiield, North Bend and Ban
don, said Mr. Ackerman, are finely
equipped in the way of high school
buildings and equipment. From the
smallest detail to the largest, these
cities have provided for the comfort
and convenience 'of the teacher and
pupil. At Marshileld and North Bend
a department for cooking and sewing
has been installed and at North Bend
an immense swimming tank is in
operation and during the'school term
dally lessons in this art are taught
the scholars. The ventilation of
these buildings Is about perfect. A
system is used whereby the temper
ature of every room is automatically
kept at a given temperature and an
electric clock is in operation which
gives out the time for each study
hour in each room irrespective of
the difference in the schedule of .the
different rooms.
"The coat room difficulty has been
solved at Marshileld. The outside
wearing apparel of the student is
hung in the school room on the side
wall and on the op.ening of school a
sliding door covers this space and a
heating arrangement is used whereby
In wet weather the wraps are subject
to a drying process which is ventilat
ed and the odors or vapor are car
ried off.
"The half yearly report of the
schools of the state will soon be
ready and will be published In the
Statesman. The work of the past
term has been very gratifying to Sup
erintendent Ackerman and he looks
for an increased interest In school
matters the coming year."
Within the last two decades there
have been only two years when the
wheat crop of France did not cover
the home demand.
France has five great mills and a
number of smaller ones at which
artificial silk Is made. There are
three kinds of it.

den, returned today from an ex
tended trip through Coos county.
He reports that the hunters are
complying with the law in good
shape this year, very few viola
tions being even hinted at.
SAM MARSDEN will leave in the
morning via the Roseburg auto
route for his annual vacation
trip. He will take in a number
of the Umpqua Valley races in
which his horse, Mack N, Is en
tored. Ho will also probably take

Coos Bay Man Tells Port Com
missioners of Mistake In
Cleveland's Harbor.
Editor Times: When the city of
Cleveland, Ohio, began first to re
ceive the large ore-carrying vessels
from the mining districts of the
Northern Lakes, it had a harbor
channel 180 feet in width. This wn3
wide enough. (So thought those la
charge of the harbor Improvements).
The large vessels loaded with oro
came Into the harbor and were towed
In bow first. They were taken out
stern first.
This did not work to the good of
Cleveland..
In a short time these vessels were
seeking harbors where they could
enter on their own power, whero
they could turn around without as
sistance, and where they could ride
at anchorage If needs be without
wharfage toll, v
Soon, little towns began to spring
up at divers places along the lako
front and Cleveland soon lost its
prestige as an ore-receiving center.
Cleveland discovered its mistake too
late and at great expense -through
condemnation and other proceedings
was forced to dredge It? harbor to
such a width as to allow the largest
ships to turn In its harbor and to
anchor out In the harbor If neces
sary. When this was done it soon
again began to be a commercial cen
ter. Now is the time to do things right.
Marshileld is probably about to
make such a mistake as Cleveland
did. We have Florence, Port Orford
and other good little points to con
tend with. As soon as the Panama
Canal Is completed there are going to
be great ships, perhaps of the Lusl
tanla and Mauretanla type sailing up
and down the Pacific coast seeking"
points where they can discharge tho
great tide of home-seekers from Eu
rope and the Atlantic coasts. Coos
Bay has a great tract of vacant tldo
lands which the Port of Coos Bay
needs NOW. It needs a turning ba
sin of considerable width at tho up
per part of Coos Bay and It needs It
RIGHT NOW. Where tho channel
lines are established NOW they will
remain for a long time. We expect
to be taxed for the construction of a
good harbor here together with sea
walls and the other things nepessary
for tho use of a great commercial
harbor on Coos Bay. We are willing
to be taxed for these purposes as In
dicated by our vote on the establish
ment of the Port of C003 Bay.
Now, It Is up to you, gentlemen,
to establish a proper kind of port
here.
A channel 1,500 feet In width oft
Marshileld Is not wide enough. Make
the channel large enough in tho be
ginning. Remember the experience
of Cleveland. Make Marshileld what
It should be. Make our channel wide
enough and deep enough to accom
modate the navies of tho world which
will come here for our coal and tim
ber. Consider the PUBLIC now and.
forget PRIVATE matters.
