PLUS MEN.
THIS THE TITLE which the Port
land Journal places upon its
leading editorial Saturday in
which it-pays a splendid tribute to
'the Coos Bay spirit, to Coos Bay men
.and to a Coos Bay citizen. The
.Journal says: , t

were like him Portland -would still
bo a village of cabins, cheap stores
.;and cheaper men. The reason tho

cause his mind is bent wholly on
himself with no interest whatever in.
the collective good. The costliest hi;
fluenco in any community Is absorp-.

in. tho search for a sou. One man
,t ,bent on upbuild of his city or state
is worth a million drones. One
brings results and the others bring
dlscouragemont nnd occupy needed
space.
"One man like William Grimes of
Coos county Is worth a thousand
acre, flejd full of doubting Thomases
and kickers, Mr. Grimes went, to
Oklahoma with tho rush. Some
body, was needed to bring order out
of tho disorder, and Mr. Grimes was-
made United States marshal and did
It. A strong hand was needed In
" the secretary of state's office In tho
territory and Roosevelt gave Mr.
Grimes tho position. A Taft dologa
tlon was wanted by the administra
tion from Oklahoma, and though
Grimes had como to Oregon, Roose
velt called on him to round up the
Oklahoma Republicans. Grimes
made tho trip and Taft made tho
landing. According to Colonel Ho
for, Mr. Grimes' motto Is "to raise
h 1 all tho tlmo."
Coos .Bay is probably the most;
alert district in Oregon. It is the'
product of her men, nnd Mr. Grimes
is among thorn. It wants a railroad,
hnd if it cannot got It othorwlso, Is
going to build It. Tho best railroad
, engineer that -could bo secured Is
surveying the line. Twolvo miles of
survey is finished, aud tho force Is

tion is following Coos Bay's leadors,
and the leadors aro plus mon. When

tholr pockets, and of courso nre get
ting results. Tho spider that Rob
ort Bruce watched finally spun his
wob. Grant "fought it out on that
lino" If it took all summer. If Lin
coln had faltered the union would
havo been dlsmomhorod. If nobody
had studied steam or olectriatty wo
would still havo nothing but horso
railroads. All human oxperlonco
backs tho Coos Bay theory. Tho an
nals of tho world confirm the capa
