It ' Is only a few weeks since a
- -well-lcnown Coos Bay couple made
-use of an automobllo In which to
evade stern parents and hurrying to
Coqullle secured license and mlnlstor
to make them one. Now comes a
similar story of a young ' Spaniard
who last week eloned with tho
daughter of a proud Castlllan resld
lng In Madrid. Tho couple made a
successful get-away under the noses
of tho young woman's stern father
and hor Jealous fiance who Is rich
and old and homely as they always
are in tho story books. The pair
are married now, and, apparently
the denouement of the story Is to
be a happy one.
A century or so ago the young
cavalier would have been a brigand,
or 'a muleteer, or a wandering trou
badour; but the time being the pres
ent, ho Is merely av chauffeur for a
wealthy grandee. While ho was con
veying the old party about Spain In
a big car he met his present wife.
She was then touring the country
with her father and fiance In tho for
mer's machine, Tho patrician young
woman immediately fell In love with
tho dark nnd reckless chauffeur, and
thoy shortly made arrangements to
elbpo.
So at night tho young man wont
to tho small hostelry whero tho girl's
party had put up. He had no man
dolin with him and ho did not sing'
beneath the lady's window. Ho mere
ly honked his horn outside in the
" road, and tho girl climbed unassisted
from her room via tho flro escape.
Two centuries' ago sho would have
tried to shin down an Ivy vine, and
probably have broken somo bones.
Her lover was disguised In a long
coat and goggles, his clothes reeked
with gnsolino and ho had a smudge
of greaso on his faco, but he was
Lochlnvar, Just tho same Lochln
var in tho sarao old piece. The In
vostlturo, only, was different.
When tho youth hnd. escorted his
swoothoart to tho waiting car which
his employer, who was a sentimental
old ruffian, had loaned him for tho
night, ho crept Into tho garago, and

tires of tho father's machine, When'
tho latter attempted to follow tho
fleeing couple, ho found that hp
could not, and cursed In tho lan
gungo which hundreds of othor Span

But tho automobllo has really bo
como an old factor In elopements.

ature delivered by Professor J. B.
Horner of the Oregon Agricultural
college, before the State Teachers'
Association in Albany, ' Jdaq'u'In 'Mil-'
ler, Senator E. D. Baker, Frederick'
H. Balch, Ella Hlgglnsbn, Edwlrf
Markham,, Mrs. E; E. Dye, Homer,
Davenport and Sam L. Simpson were
discussed at. 'length. It was shown
that 'much fine literature and some
classics have bbe'n written by Ore
gon men and .women. Many ro
mances were also toid, one of which
touches tho life and wife of Joaquin
Miller who lived and loved at Canyon
City for several years.
"As an author ho was known as
Giles Gastbn, and she as Minnie
'Myrtle. They were regular con
tributors to the Eugene Register of
which Clnclnnatus Heine Miller was
editor. An editorial request for tho
name and address of the talented
Minnie Myrtle was followed by the
answer that she was Minnie Dyer of
GOld Beach. Correspondence be
camo active and he made a visit to
her home by tho sea. Ho arrived
on Thursday and they were wed on
the following Sunday.
"More minutely told It was thus.
On Sunday morning the young Judge
who had been paying his attentions
to Miss Mlnne arid aspired to mem
bership In tho Dyer family, appeared
on the scene At the door he was
met by 'Miss Minnie andvlier new
friend, whom sho Introduced to the
judgo and took her exit. Where
upon Mr. Miller said: "Judgo, I'll
havo a word with you, sir. Miss
Minnie and I are to bo mar
ried in a few moments, and you are
to have the honor of performing the
cereniony.
"Marrying another fellow to one's
own best glrlwas a feature of law
that tho fainting judge could not
comprehend. But as soon as he re
gained his senses sufficiently, he per
formed the cereniony, which was as
awkwardly done as It was confes
sedly embarrassing to tho officiating
Judgo.
"Many a heroine has been made
great In history by the possession of
a small share of her heroic endur
ance, enduring courage, calmselfpos-
sessl'on, loyal heart and creative
brain. She was talented, so was he;
but they were woefully mlsmatedl
Tho storm cloud crossed and ro
crossed tholr way till adversity
cruelly separated their paths for
many years. But thoy were finally
reconciled to each other just as she
was triumphantly stepping Into an
other chamber of God's beautiful
mansion. Her sweet disposition, as
well as her pootlc talent, was con
tagious. Sho produced a marked;
change In the' character and writing!
of her husband. That delicate and'
refined love, of tho truly beautiful
natiiro and warmth of sympathy for
the erring hnd tho' unfortunate which
characterized his 'writings must be
admitted to date from his marrlago.

bo considered composite. Joaquin
combining'' the"'' keen conception and
fiery dash of the young pioneer, as
his earlier writings displayed him
with tho kindly thought, the gentle
touch and dollcate coloring Insepar
able from, all which was said and
dono by his lost wlfo. This. Joa
quin Mllfor" fully realized, for ho
has said: "That Which Is best in mv
works was inspired by her." Though
their separation was long, n sorrow
to both, and tho flowors have blos
somed for many years over the gravo
of tho poetess yet In object, aim and
desire ,thoy ,ara one today, and tho
soul of tho beautiful bride which tho
poot wooed and. won In the wilds of
tho Coqulllo so long ago, still shines
In all his lines and brightens all his
pagos."
