Defends resldont of that state

"When I first went to
Oklahoma years ago there was con
siderable lawlessness, and-In many
sections a six shooter was the 'aw.
But It is changed now, and wo llvo
in peace and comfort with vbut few
outbreaks of lawlessness or deviltry.
One would suppose that It keeps tho
sheriffs and the court officers busy
catching and punishing criminals,
but it is not so I venture to Bay
that not as many men have beon con
victed of serious crimes in our
county as In this county tho past
year."
"There is an Increased demand for
ladies cigarettes in Oregon," said a
cigar and cigarette salesman. "Not
until a few years ago
Oregon did the company that
Women I represent make a
and ladles' size cigarette.
Cigarettes. Slnco they have been
doing it tho demand
for them has Increased at a rato
that Is alarming to moralists and
satisfactory to the company. Tho
cigarette Is much smaller and a
great deal milder than tho men's
size, and its attractive appearance is
said to have a gteat deal to do with
gaining It favor among tho women.
Our Increased sales is all the ground
J havo for tho assertion that smok
ing among tho women of Oregon fs
on the Increase. There aro no vis
ible signs of tho weed's growing pop
ularity In tho state. In many cities
In the east tho women smoke cigar
ettes openly In tho cafes, but I havo
never seen anything of that sort in
Oregon. It Is possible that they
adopt tho smnll boy's tactics and go
out behind tho wood shed for their
after dinner smoko."
