TOMATO
SAVES HIS LIFE
With It Castaway Farm Hand
Bails Boat For Twenty
Nine Hours. -
ROCHE8TER, N. T May 21.
Edgar L. Brown who was blown
across Lko Ontario In a recont big
stona In a, flat bottom punt, walked
the gangway ot the car ferryboat On
tario at Charlotte at 5 o'clock a few
days- later and was oheered by half
the population of tho Tillage. The
famous boat was on the ferry and
waa Immediately claimed by Michael
Burns, a farmer, who owns It. A
aelghbor offered to give Burns and
ta boat a lift home In his wagon.
"Not on your life," Bald Burns:
"tkat bot haa a record now and It
wonia bo a disgrace to It to put it
cm a wagon. I'm going to row It
arouad to tho rond tomorrow."
Noither JJrowo nor the punt show
ay 111 affects of the wlord experl
ieo. Brown says ho entered the
boat In Round pond about 7 o'clock
Monday morning He fell asleep and
' whoa he awoke half an hour later,
waa nearly out of fight of land. From
thoa until he landed on the Canadian
const, three, and one-half miles from
Grafton, about noon Tuesday, he was
mostly In the bottom of the craft
balling for his life with a tomato
can.
His clothing was soaked In the
first hour at aea. and was sodden
wtfen he landed Ho says the waves
looked as tall ai church steeples.
Didn't Do Any Thinking.
"What did I think of?" echoed
Brown, when asked about Tils experi
ence. "I simply couldn't think. Ev
ery faculty seemed concentrated in
that tomato can. It was only Al
mighty God that brought me through.
Man alone could not have survived.
1 suffered from cold tenlbly and the
exercise of balling undoubtedly pre
vented me from succumbing from
exposure.
"I tried to use the oars, but saw
tf was lmpossibla to make headway
ajrainat th winu. The only course
epen to mo was to go. with the wind
p. id keep her afloat until I was
blown to tho other shore.
"I alternately rowed and bailed
all floy. At nlrsht I stopped rowlntr
and bailed all night. About 10
o'clock Tuesday mtrnlng I looked i-r
from balling and saw the blue hd".e
nt the Canadian shore. It was blow
ing a galo then. Tho wind was
southeast when tt started, but aftor
'ward blow from tho so.uth. I got
'-near the land about noon.
"Tho boat was swamped several
rods from shoro and it took my last
ouneo of strength to got her in and
pull her up on the land. I collapsed,
bnt managed to hang onto the paint
er. Got Pood nt Farm Honsc.
"When I got so I could walk I
made my way to a farmhouse, whore
I got food and dry clothing. I had
eaten nothing sinco supper Sunday
evening."
Brown rested a llttlo while and
then walked to Cobourg. He was
too weak to finish tho seven miles
to his wlfe'B house in Port Huron on
foot and went by train. Mrs. Brown
had heard nothing about hlB being
blown out to sea but his first
thought wbb that she would havo
heard It and he wanted to relievo her
mind. A lotter announcing hla sup
posed drowning reached her brothor
the night of Brown's arrival In Port
Hope. He was n hero in Port Hope
and thb Canadian papers of tho sec
tion wore full of tho story of tho
sixty-two miles voyage across the
lake.
"I'll got him and the boat n good
rmgagemont at a show house In Ro
chester," former Village Clerk John
Keon proposed o Brown's employer,
P. J. Rlgney, when tho hero was
being congratulated in Charlotte,
"Thoro's a plough out on tho farm
that Just fits Edgar," Mr. Rlgnoy
said, decisively. "Come on honie,
Edgar."
Brown laughed and started for the
farm. He Is a self-possessed but
aaodest chap, 37 years old. His well
knit form Indicated the strength that
carried him through the ordeal.
Brown went to tho place where ho
landed, near Grafton, Friday night
and rowed the boat ten miles to
Cobourg, to got it aboard tho forry.
