Oiliciul Paper of Coos County. UNIVERSAL QUIET. FROM EVERY SOURCE, by let ter, press, and voice, conies the tale of universal quiet through out ' ui even old Marshfleld is In the range of dubious commer cial ii.act.on, r.U along with all the other towns of State and Nation, has her little giowl going on account of It; u t s' e s not one whit worse off thn;. h lrd Js of her neighbors and rea iie3 th s and makes the best of it; charge- t up to the pending tariff, and complains and laughs, and u - "nd joshes, and 13 as patient as may be. She knows that in this fortuitous year s'l- is In betfr shape to take on her real dest.ny that ever before; that thr" Is more talk of Coos Bay over this land, than ever before; that bisg'r m"i and heavier capital arp In'pvpted In, and allied to, the city and county, than have, for years, bppr ' r'l """cerned about her; that bv ti'IIi her commerce, her bar, her camps, her general busi nesses, are a'l within the reach of the vpl,ff nnd ire to share In the new dovplonni"tit that Uncle Sam, Hi'l, Ilnr-M-nan are responsibly con juring and preparing and dealing out. ro- tpv b'-s more real "irons In the fir"" at this moment than she has It"'! for time beyond calcula tion, and mos of them, if not all, are RnnHno, feasible, and as cer tain an they are logical. That all these enterprises are waiting on the final paFsago of the new tariff law, will not, of course, be admit ted"; but the tariff is as good as anything rise of a big and impor tant sort to lay the Inactivity to; and as nothirt? else presents itself as a scaneennt, that disconcerting, ham poring and hindering pretext will servo all mirposos. Just as soon as things loosen up, wo know that Marshfield is in a position to respond as quickly and successfully as any city of her size In America; and sho will do It, al right; howsoever we gloom and glower and growl. She Is gradually freeing horsolf fiom the worst of her cumbering and depressing in fluences nt home, and abroad In the stato, and will rally swiftly and Tioartlly to overy scheme and fran chise that Is making for her advance In every line. She made a grand tour with Cook's lourists, And spent a whole week in Paree, Pa. of course she speaks French like a native Of Kankakee. Anyhow, an Income tax will not deter any nervy man from trying to get into the millionaire class. The tariff tangle will eventually be unwound, but we can expect to hear of many a snarl before that conies to pass. The strongest argument against the practice of medicine that we know anything about is the case a young doctor can make out against an old one. The writers of newspaper articles advocating war on the house fly can rest assured that they meet with the approval of every bald-headed man in the country. A Washington man has built his houso over a lake, so that he can fish through the floor. We hope the hole In, the floor Is not so small that the very large flsh will get away. The world is inclined to sneer at a woman who marries the man who shot her, but her romanco may, aft er all, havo a happier ending than that of the woman whoso husband comes homo half shot every night or two.
