-WESTERN TOWN NAMES.
An Oregon newspaper, backed by
public sentiment, proposes to rename
several hundred of the towns In that
state which are today striving
grow under the handicap of
most grotesque and outlandish
pellations, says the Register
to
the
Leader of Des Moines, la.
There Is nothing like a euphonious
and unpretentious cognomen. The
life activities of many a man have
been seriously hindered by the un
fortunate significance, or absurd
sound of his name. Men who for any
lawful reason find their family
names a source of inconvenience or
humiliation, are permitted to choose
some other title. The people of
Oregon think that the same right
should be extended to towns.
A person studying the map of
Oregon would discover in unblushing
print a civic nomenclature which
would outdo in bizarre ineptness the
infamous titles chosen by the grace
less young officers of the British
army a few centuries ago when they
were required to rename the Jews of
London. The map is spotted with
towns bearing such names as "Mur-!
tlprer's Gulch ." "Crooked River."
"Desolation Creek," "Rattlesnake,"
"Pistol River," "Muddy," "Needy,"
"Sucker," and scores of others which
are no less ridiculous. All of these
towns, assert most of the people in
the state, ought to be renamed im
mediately. There certainly is reason in such
a movement. There would indeed,
be much wisdom In appointing some
sort of committee to rename a cer
tain per cent of the towns of a half
dozen other western states. A town
which Is known to men as "Murder
er's Gulch," must have an arduous
time of it trying to convince pros
pective residents that it is a decent
and proper place to live. The liter
ature disseminated by the booster's
committee of "Desolation," no mat
ter how specious, would defeat Its
own purpose by the mere name of the
town it celebrated.
When white men first invaded the
western country they had little
thought of acquiring permanent res
idences. Most of the early settlers
hoped to make their fortunes and
return to the east as speedily as pos
sible. The Idea that the rude camps
they formed would endure and be
come Identified with wealthy states,
did not come until later. Conse
quently, when the names for such
camps were chosen, the temporary
residents had no hesitancy in giving
expression to the grim humor which
was an essential part of their rough
lives. Tho old pioneers were a light
liearted, careless, irrepressible breed
of men who could laugh at their own
misery and homesickness, and who
named their towns with facetious re
gard for thpir desperate condition.
Tho names of these western towns
served them well enough a few
yoars ago. But tho west Is chang
ing. Great prosperity has come to
tho country, and dignity. Many of
tho towns will eventually become
cities, and figure largely In tho com
mercial worjd. It is time that tho
wostorn towns prepare for their fu-
turo greatuess by preparing, first of
nil, to do business under responsible
names.
