Eggs are 60 'cents per dozen In
Portland and 55 cents per dozen in
North Bend, a fact that shows that
the claim of some pooplo that It Is
cheaper to live In Portland than on
Coos Bay. Is unfounded.

Children Will Hold Christmas Excr
clses Before Taking Vacation.
Tho pupils of the Marshfleld
school are preparing for their Christ
mas entertainment which will take
place Friday. A program of exercises
has been arranged and tho parents
and frlonds of the children will at
tend. This morning the boys and girls
wore carrying Christmas greens to
the school house to use for the decor
ation of the rooms.
This afternoon tho pupils of tho
first, second and. third grades, as
sisted by their teachers, Miss Alice
McCormac, Miss Sebolt and Mrs,
Wilbur, gave an entertainment for
the pupils of the other grades.
The schools close tomorrow for
the Christmas holidays,
Club Meets. The members of tho
Chaminade Club held a regular
meeting last night at the Flnnish
hall. At the next meeting the
monthly musical program will be
given and a concert is to bo held
probably In January.

on Prospect avenue is nearlng com

latter is being pushed as fast as the
weather will permit.

salmon- cannery at Gardiner has a
big lot of canned salmon ready for
shipment. Thore is on. hand 15.P00
cases of salmon and of this 13,000
cases will be shipped In a few days
to Marshfiold and from this point to
Portland.

The steamer Nann Smith will ar
rive tomorrow and among tho pas
sengers will bo C. M. Goodyear who
formerly traveled in tho east for
the Smith Lumber Company. Mr.
Goodyear comes to tho coast to
study tho different timber products
of this country with a view of bet
ter informing himself to sell lumber
for tho firm in the eastern markets.

for tho AVostern Union was put on
tho list this morning when It was
announced at local headquarters that
a baby boy had been born to Mr. and
Mrs. James G. Laird at Laird's Ra
tion. Tho father, Mr. Laird has
been Bneman for tho telegraph com
pany for tho past twenty years and
looks after a portion of tho lino from
Coos Bay to Roseburg.
Thero are about 6,000 Now York
persons who have not been In tho
city, on an average, two months In
a year ln tho decado, Europo, the
south, seashore and mountains have
them for tho other ten months.
DR. GE6. E. DIX returned yester-
day from a three weeks trip to
his old homo ln Rochester, Minn.,
and to points in Montana.1- -He
was mighty glad to get back irom
tho 'lands of snow and cold '.' In
comparison with whose wintry
blasts, the frost spirit on Coos
Bay Is like summer zephyrs and
an arctic gale.

Capt. Olson, who recently resigned
as master of the Alliance to tako
charge of tho Nann Smith, is ln tho
city with his wife. Capt. Olson will
go down to Bay Point on tho next
trip of tho Nann Smith. Capt. Nel
son will tako tho boat down and
turn her over to Capt. Olson who
will assume command. At present
Capt. and Mrs. Olson have rooms at
the Coos hotel. Thoy ,wlM make
their headquarters ln Marshfleld but
Mrs, Olson expects to be on the ship
with her husband most of tho time.
This next trip will bo Capt. Nol
son's last to Coos Bay as master of
a boat as ho is retiring from sea
life after many year's service.
