THE DOMESTIC
SCIEXCE SCHOOLS
It was only recently that we
addressed the public on the need of
domestic science training in the
schools, and of a special domestic
school for the preparation of joung-j
women who actually prefened to
enter house service, instead of fac-
tory or shop service, but they were
intclligent enough to know that
bouse service nau uecome a proies-
slon to such an extent that 10 avoid
being merely a drudge woman must
Xnow her business. There wa3 no
such training offered, either In the
schools or in a special school. To -
UdJ, IUU1 U 13 CitllUllib Uli-icu, uuiu
) ilinn tn fHnlninn nffswml lrtfll
In the shcools, where every girl can
learn the housekeeping art that at
' least will be the final achievement
and in a special school, where wo
men desiring to make a business of
house service will be trained into
skilled worKmen and women who
do not know their own domestic
business will be given instruction in
She maintenance of a household, says
an exchange.
In the cities of the West, as well
as of the East, there has been o
dearth of household service for sev
eral years. This increased in the
Vest especially as prosperity in
creased, for young women remained
at home when their fathers were
alio to command such day wages
as would support an entire family In
comfort. But these young women
i i
were not contented, It is well known.
They have sought factory service,
even in times of prosperity, because
it gave them a larger life. And
lhoy have begun to seek house ser
vice, because of an lnureased con
sciousness that while there was more
excitement in factory work, more
"life," there was more strain and leas
humamiess. But there has not been
a recognized staudaid for household
service, and this, more than any oth
er one thing, has prevented Intelli
gent young women from entering It.
With a pobslbillty of exact prepar
ation, so thnt a housekeeper can
3cnow what she Is receiving and the
house attendant can know exactly
what she Is to render, there must
come a different conception of work
in the house, a different attitude to
ward it. The point Is to remove from
house seivico all that harks back to
slavery, to bondage, and give It rec
ognizable, standing .
This will bo possible when domes
tic science Is taught as a science,
and a certificate of knowledge is a
possible thing, quite llko a diploma.
PESSIMISTIC PREACHER.
. In a Thanksgiving sermon at
lho Old South Church In Boston the
Itcv. John Hopkins Dcnibou made
Uio rathor startling assertion that
"the Httlo Russians and Finns, who
slug tho national hymn in pur public
, ;liools have moio of the spirit that
made Ameilca than we have." This
is certainly not over complimentary
Jo the descendants of the early set
tlors, and tho average American, wo
believe, will be inclined to regard the
Ktatamont as largely unwarranted.
Tho young American? who sing our
national hymn In Boston or else
where have just as much of tho
right spirit in thorn as tho littlo
Pinna and Ilussians who havo como
to our shores hungering for tho bles
sings which llboity and beneficent
Jaws bestow on a virilo, progres
siva and industrious people.
When tho time conies for an ex
hibition of tho spiiit that made
AuiesVa, wo can safely roly ou tho
sous and daughters of America to
demonstrate that good, red blood
flows in their veins and that tholr
jiatrlotlsm is not weaker than that
of tliolr forefathers, evon though at
iiuuii their hustling after tho ai
olBfity dollar mnkes them nppear
selfish and unmindful of tho hotter
(things tho early patriots fought for.
Tho Boston preacher's, remarks,
wo fear, will strike tho aYerago'lfOOX.
