On assuming the chair, the meet
ing having been called to order by
Secretary Reeder, Mr. Smith outlin
ed the purposes of the Citizens
League and said that he regretted
that its purposes had been misrepre
sented by some. He said that the
league believed it had the best can
didates but he said that he and the
league didn't have any criticism to
make of the opposition candidates,
lie said that if anything was said in
the meeting that reflected on any
body, he would be glad to have it
answered.
It. A. Copple said that he was a
member of the Citizens' League and
that he believed it was a good thing.
He said its object was to secure bet
ter city government. He said that
the league was opposed to running
the city away into debt through cur
Tent expenses.
Tom NIcols spoke particularly of
the fire department. He said that it
was a volunteer department, the
city council and the mayor should
not attempt to run it. He said that
the council and major a year ago

month. He said he had opposed it
and wanted to assure the people that
If the city would pay the fire depart
ment J300 per year, it would have

that the department was composed
of good men and was doing good

J. W. Butler said that he believed

corder, being a graduate of Brown

He said his entire life had been spent
here, that his father had been master
-of the ship that brought the machi
nery in hero for the fir6t mill on
Coos Bay and his mother had taught
school In the first school house built
in Coos county.
Thomas Coke said that he had
helped to organize the Citizens'
League for tho purpose of improving
the municipality. He said that it
happened that ho had been selected
to run for councilman. He said that
he would ondeavor to see that tho
public improvements were properly
done, that the city gets a dollar's
worth of work for each dollar ex
pended. He is in favor of continu
ing the improvement work.
Carl Albrecht spoke along the lino
of his previous statements. Ho said
that tho current oxpenses should be
reduced. He criticized the city en
Klneerlng department. In regard to
being a "Simpson man," ho said he
had worked for L. J. Simpson for ten
yenrs and in that time had dono much
to boost Coos Bay. He said that ho
would vote for any franchise unless
the abutting property owners had
given tholr consent.
Mrs. E. E. Hayes, who has been
visiting her mother, Mrs. Brown, at
Coquille City, returned home Saturday.
Mrs. Rood and the Misses Winlfed
and Mildred Rood spent the past few
days visiting friends on South Coos
River.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Turpln and Miss
Genevieve Sengstacken were the
guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. C. M.
Byler.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kittson anil
son and Mrs. M. Cavanagh of Eat
slde, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs.
Chas. Cavanagh over Thanksgiving
Day.
E. R. Hodson, who left two weeks
ago for Atlas, Cal., returned by the
Drain route Saturday. His mother,
Mrs. L. Hodson accompanied him to
her home.
Mrs. M. Marsters, who has been
visiting relatives at Catching Inlet,
and friends at North Bend, left on
the Breakwater Friday for her home
at Medford.

The Christian Endeavor social
which was given Saturday evening, In
the basement of Myers store, consist
ing of songs, readings, recitations,
etc., nas a decided success. Light re
freshments were served.
