Southern Oregon Company and
City Council Have Matter
Under Consideration.
The Marshfield city council last
evening received, a proposition from
the Southern Oregon Company to
convert the old cemetery tract near
Knob hill Into a public park. The
tract was originally ceded by the
Southern Oregon company for a bury
ing ground, and as It Is no longer
being used for that purpose, the com
pany still maintains a claim to It.
There Is between three and four
acres and the company Deneves 'iito the Lapps.

the company's employe. The bill was
for about $30.
D. L. Rood, after considerable de
bate, was ordered a rebate of about
$121 on Second street, he having
built a concrete sidewalk Instead of
the plank walk that was ordered.
He did the work personally but had
paid the assessment for the plank
walk.
Chestnut street grading was ac
cepted from Contractor Flanagan.
The Southern Oregon Company wants
the side of the grade sloped so that
there won't be a landslide. The
company's wish will be investigated.
Contractor Walter Condron's con
tract for grading Cedar street was
extended to January 1.
The Lapp claim to certain property
that Is being utilized by the city In
opening a new street was referred to
Councilmen Savage, Sacchl and Fla

IMPROVING RAPIDLY
Sends Wireless Message From San
, Francisco to Mayor Straw Show
ing Humor Is Not Affected.
J. W. Bennett, who . has been in
Lane's hospital in San Francisco for
provement, over which W. U. Dou
glas and the council clashed a few
weeks ago, was up again last night.
Councilman Sacchl said that he
didn't think It was right to impose
upon the property owners the cost
of the gutter and curb as proposed
when it was understood that the
street was to be permanently lmpror-
ous friends In this city. The rheu
matism has disappeared but a little
stiffness In the knee reminds him of
the old trouble. However, he is
taking treatment for that and ex
pects that the last trace of It will
soon disappear and enable hlrn to
spend Christmas at his home In this
city. Just to show that the rheu-
the following wireless message which
Mayor E. E. Straw received from him
yesterday is produced herewith:
"Thank you for wireless message.
Rheumatism destroyed, am treating
articulation by the massage process.
Articulation excellent. Am on

message, something unusual."
cd next spring. Owing to the adver-1 matism has not affected his humor,
tisoment for bids having called for
planking and curbing as well as fill
ing, the council feared that It could
not collect the assessments unless
all the work Is done. It was finally
decided that the street committee
should take the matter up with the
property owners and adjust the mat
ter. A petition from seventeen resi
dents near Flanagan and Nevada
streets that an arc light be placed
there was .referred to the light com
mittee. A bill from the Waterworks Com
pany for the cost of moving a hy

Editor Coos Bay Times: I notice
your remarks In the Saturday even

ing of candidates for municipal of
fices, and in order that the voters
of this city may know where I am
at will say.
If I am elected for councilman on
December 1st, I will stand for all
judicious Improvements of the city,
bearing in mind at all times and see
ing to it that the property holders
who pay for th" same, get ono hun
dred cents worth of improvements
for a dollar. I
I will staud for reduction in the i

With tho view of reducing tho
city's debt without bonding .its
proporty, I will stand for paying tho
old ost city warrants first or In other
words commonco to pay from tho
right end, with a vlow of reestnblsh

everybody a squaro deal.
1 am in favor of listening to tho

I am decidedly against bonding

Editor Coos Bay Times: Having
received tho nomination for city re
corder at the regular caucus, I desire
to say: That while I have lived on
Coos Bay tho best portion of my life,
I have been attending to my own
business, and never mixed up in
politics, but since I am up for a pub
lic office, I deem It my duty to tho
voters of Marshfield to tell them
whether I can fill tho office If elected,
for which I liave been nominated.
Will say I am qualified to perform
the duties of tho office without the
assistance of a deputy; and if elected
I will see that the duties of the of
