PROSPEROUS COCS COUNTY.
The Conuille Sentinel editor jour
neyed to Myrt'e Point the other day
a.nd noted the energy and push of
some of the people of that pretty
town in the w'- of improvements.
Some are building fine, cozy cot
tages and others are erecting more
commodious residences. The saw
mill was puffing its white stream of
seam and smoke, and wagons were
being loaded with lumber and
teams were hauling them into the
town. The late rain 'has startpcl the
grasses, and the firlds and hillsides
were green and almost as fresh as
they are in springtime. The day
was as beautiful and pleasant as a
summer one. There was no ne?d
of a fire in the parlor grates, the
birds were slngfng, and although au-'
.1.
tumn has put upon nature Its shroud,
the sweet freshness of newly grown
Tegetatlon seemed to bring joy and
buoyancy to every one we met.
The
public school with Its large attend-
ance was a feature that must be no'
ticed. Children of a'l ages lined
the sidewalks at 4 o'clock In th.2
afternoon, and joyfully skipped
along toward their hapny homes. In
the morning wagons came rolling
Into town with the products of the
dairy, and waited their turn to un
load at the creamery. Large red
luscious apples w?re to be seen at
the trading places, and vegetables
of the very best quality were on
exhibition at every store. Real es
tate men were offpring lands at a
figure that if proper" y farmed would
pay for themselves In two or three
years. The two banks seemed to be
busy receiving and paying. After
noting these things we could not
find any excuse for anyone to cry
Iiard times, espnclally the farmers,
when biittpr brings 40 cents a
pound and eggs 50 cents a dozen.
Potatoes wore one dollar a hundred,
and other vegtables sold in pnnnr
lion. Hay sells for twelve to fifteen
dollars a ton. ard feed ccraln $2u to
$30 a ton. Opts p-e HO cents a
bushel In a country where the soil
yields from 50 to SO bushels to the
acre when properly cultivated or
farmed. After v'wlng those things
we think we have a right to call
this a graM country. The climate
Is mild and invigorating, and one
can rnise prolific crops to sustain
man and beast. We have only
sketched a portion of our advantages.
There Is room for four times the
population we now have, and they
will find us ere long, and this por
tion of Coos county will become the
Harden spot of Oregon. If Uncle
Sam treats us right wo will havo
two great harbors, which will afford
cheap transportation to all the mar
kets of the world. Coquillo Senti

EXPLAINING ouk positiox.
I The Pessimist is happy,
He laughs at everything,
If life's unfair he doesn't care,
Nor envies clown nor king,
By grievous disappointments,
I Of course, he isn't cursed;
He dees not rue a grievance, who
Expects the very worst.
Tho Ontlmlst Is rpnrfnl
He hopes for better days;
He says the outlook's cheerful
For men to n)end the,r s

But afterward, great 'Scott!
How much he wails when something
fails,
To find that there is not!
No shattered idol pains him
Who knows that all are clay;
He takes things as they are, and has
No reckoning to pay.
He likes folks for their w?akness,
And hates where'er he lists
And that is why, dear reader, I
Have joined the Pessimists.
There are more kinds of shlftless
ness than there are kinds of religion.
Xot one man in a hundred has
sense enough to take care of money
after he gets It.
As a rule, people do not think as
much of their ancestors as they think
of their heirlooms.
It Is terribly hard to pursue snch
a course that it pleases both an old
and a young person.
What has become of the old-fash-lonpd
man who caught the chlldrjn

You will often find a mother who
thinks the baby loves her more than
it loves its father, because it cries
to go to her when it is hungry.
