General Flnzer Secures Tract Near
Roseburg.
ROSEBURG, Ore., Nov. 20. Act
ing as an agent of the Federal Gov
ernment, Adjutant-General W. E.
Flnzer, of tho Oregon National
Guard, purchased a 27-acro tract of
land, ono mile northeast of the city,
for a target range, The price paid
was ?1,750. Although title to tho
land is vested in the United States,
the range will be under state control
and used exclusively by tho state
militia. It will become tho largest
range In the state, affording oppor
tunity for marksmanship tests at
1,200 yards. J
STYLES OF TODAY.
A Chicago professor, denouncing
the present styles of femlnlno clothes
as "frights," says that "tho . luteal
woman's figure should lio an oval,"
What have professors to do with
the matter? says the Now York
World. In tho calondar of fashion
there is a time for curves and a time
for angles. Just now straight lines
aro obligatory, and all the laws of
Euclid cannot alter them. When the
fancy for crinolines returns, woman
will assume cylindrical proportions,
and not all tho college faculties in
Christendom can prevent her. On
questions of female fashion, tho bal
lot Is denied. to man.
Tho theory that each generation
Inherits the accumulated wisdom of
its predecessors Is held in some quar
ters. Its fallacy is In no way better
proved than by the failuro of man
to profit by tho experience of his an
cestors in their futile attompts to reg
ulate femlnlno attire. Women as re
spects fashion occupy a "higher
world" into which jnen aro not pri
vileged to enter. When will tho
ruder sex learn discretion and ab
stain from criticism that moroly re
flects its helplessness to alter Immu
table conditions?
