Y j Coquille, Jerry Huntley got busy with
:t ' a counter net 1 1 Inn Mint Is liplnir inn-

should not be permitted to get the
Idea in their heads that the upper
river people do not like fish. Such
a supposition cannot be permitted to
pass unchallenged.

Fair Made Money.
That the fair was a financial suc
cess in addition to being a success
in other ways is shown by tho above
figures, $521 being dorlved above the
ordinary expenses. Whllo a deficit
of over $2,000 is shown In tho re
port, this is due to tho expenditure
of about $2,500 in constructing
a grand stand and othor Improve
ments on tho grounds. Theso Im
provements were made under vory fa
vorablo conditions and It is estimat
ed that If they had to bo made now,
tin cost would be about $1,000
greater. Theso Improvements are
of a permanent nature and practical
ly no expense will be needed to get
the grounds In condition for next
year's fair.
In order to adjust the matter fin
ally, Mr. Carleton Is calling on tho
contributors to a guarantee fund of
about $900 to pay their portions of
It to reduce tho debt. Tho guaran
tors and the remaining debt will bo
paid from tho earnings from special
race meetings and othor ovents to
bo given in tho future.
This season, tho management of
tho fair encountered mnny obstacles
owing to It being the first one held
hero In years. That it proved n suc
cess financially as woll as In other
respects will bo gratifying nows to
all Interested. Tho 1908 fair's suc
cess hns paved tho one for greater
and moro successful fairs horo in tho
future and tho cooperation of all
will undoubtedly bo gladly given.

MYRTLE POINT, Ore., Nov.
7. Tho Enterprise says: "R.
C. Dement has returned from a
visit of Bovoral weoks In tho

thinks that If that section was
favored with Coos County's
cllinnto It would bo n great
country, but lacking that, it is
only great In Bomo respects.
They depend upon irrigation for
tholr crops, nnd at that only cer-
tain crops will grow, because
4 of tho cold weather with frosts
during tho summer and freezing
winters. During his visit there
was a snow storm thnt covered
tho ground in tho valloys and
laid to a depth of six Inches In
tho hUls, whllo occasionally in
tho winter months tho snow
falls to depths that will conceal
fences from view."
