The above statement of the judges
tells the story of the result in The
Times Grand Prize Contest. The
large, number, of votes cast on the
last day, nearly 100,000, gives evi
dence of the Intense interebt in the
outcome. The Times office was a
busy place ;Saturday evening taking
care of the many subscriptions that
were turned In by the various con
testants, f Sonic of the voters were
a trifle 'late and subscriptions did
not arrive in time to count, but
were not of such number as to affect
the resulLOno of the surprises was
the splendid., spurt made on the last
day by Miss Genevieve Tellefson of
Eassjde, whb by making the phen
omenal run of 17,742 votes beat
Eric Bolt for first place in the First
district. i
The ballots box was closed and
sealed promptly at 9 o'clock Satur
day evening by the judges who took
It in charge and it was open at 9
o'clock this morning In Judge Sehl
bredo's office, and tho votes counted.
The following Is the final count as
ofllcially certified to by the judges:

for a fort and batteries could be
Installed there to excellent ad
vantage. "A minimum of 58 men is requir
ed for organization of coast artillery
as a branch of the National Guard
service found that such a foice
could be readily mustered at Mash
field, Ore., if necessary, one platoon
might be organized and stationed
at North Bend, a short distance
from Marshfield and on the bay.
Ther.e does not seem to be any build
ing at either of these points suit
able for an armory at this time, but
assuranco was given that an armory
would be built by local money, if
necesbarj . and rented to the state at
a small cost. Inasmuch as the gov
ernment supplies in the neighbor
hood of 6000 worth of stores and
equipment to each company, It is
necessary that a substantial building
be provided for the care of this
property.
"The ono objection that Coos Bay
is a considerable distance from
actual fortifications at this time does
not seem to be an important one.
Cost of transportation to the Colum
bia River forts Is compmatlvely
small. For the time being, or until
such time as Coos Bay becomes
equipped with batteries, tho field of
service for a Coos Bay artillery com
pany would necessarily be at the
mouth of the Columbia. The men
would bo taken there each summer
for practical Instruction. For the
proper training of the company at Its
home station theie would be no dif
ficulty in having non-commissioned
officers nsslgned from Fort Stevens
or Fort Columbia. All In all, tho
proposition of organizing on Coos
Bay looks most favorable and I shall
so report."
General FInzer spent about ten
days In the Coos Bay district, during
which time he visited the entrance
to the harbor and looked over tho
artillery' work.
