"You see," she said, "I have- culti
vated all the Httlo mannerisms of
men. I don't smoke or drink, but I
do shave onco In n whllo as a matter
of form. A' man must carry a razor,
mustn't ho? I know both sides of
women," sho continued. "When
there's a man around, she's all taffy
and molasses but whon he's awny and
she's with her own sex, sho turns ns
from sweet cidor to vinegar. Many
women, believing I was a man, have
sought to win my affections. I have
taken them to tho theatre nnd sup
per, nnd then excused myself with
tho words, 'my wife Is waiting for
mo,' much to their consternation.
I'vo learned, for I'm anything but
good looking, that a woman will ac
cept a man's attentions no mntter It
he looks like a monkey, provided ho
spends money on her."
Tells of a Silly AVoninn.
"In Paris, I used to sit at tho Cafes
along tho boulovartls and watch tho
gay throngs. To tho Parisians I was
just a plain little man, with glasses,
who sipped vlchy. I couldn't spenk
French, but I asked an American
lady to accompany me to the theatre.
What a silly thing sho was. Sho
flirted desperately -with mo, nnd
mind you, sho was a Now Yorker,
and her husband was on this side.
"When I was n girl, I remember
onvylng father his lot. Ho lived
calmly and seemed to onj y life In
a philosophical way, whereas mother
fussed through It. I never liked to
sow. Mother used to try to make mo
stitch on tho quilts, but I declined.

NEW YORK, Oct. 30. Charles
I enjoyed much more using a ham
mer and nails like father.
"Until I was 35, and I am now 50,
my lot was a hard ono. My parents
died and I wns left alone. I camo
from Ontario, Canada, to tho states,
and found work ns I could. I always
worked under women nnd found
thorn slavedrivers.
"Finally I took tho step and blos
somed forth as a man. Nature had
given me a suspicion of a mustache,
and I cultivated It. My hands and
feet are stiff and swollen with
rheumatism, so I found it easy to
wear men's gloves and shoes. Tho
rest was easy. But I tell you, col
lar buttons gave me more trouble
thnn anything else. No wonder men
lose their tempers. I had trouble In
learning to shave. Now I use a safe
ty razor. Onco In a while I buy a
fashion magazine, so you see tho
feminine Instinct Is not entirely sub-duod.-
Although sho hnd no difficulty in
deceiving men nnd women, Miss
Johnson admits that tho sharp eyes
of children have several times pene
trated her disguise. Llttlo boys and
girls huvo occasionally said to her,
"Oh, you look like a woman." Sho
has had to bo on her guard with
them.
Miss Johnson then told how sho
felt when sho failed to pnss Inspec
tion at Ellis Island.
"Tho momont I entered tho room,"
sho said, "I had a chill. Somethlng
seomed to toll me that my days as a
man wore over. They do scrutenlzo
you so closely, and my voice never
sounded so ladylike. I wonder what
I can do to chango my voice. And
my hair. It will stand out straight
In the back desplto tho barber, for I
wore my hair In a knot for so long-.
But tho ofTiclnls here have boon kind
to mo. I'm so nfrald I will be recog
nized when I return to my work.
This being detained Is like being kepc
In prison. I hope I'll get away
soon."
Released by tho Officers.
And Miss Jonnson's wish camo
truo, sho was takon to tho hospital
to appear again before tho board,
and Inquiry Into hor case having
beon made later, she tripped down
tho walk from tho hospital to tho
boat landing wearing her masculine
attire. She nad been discharged and
was now free to go whoro she choose,
in whatever attire sho choose.
As sho had the sympathy of Com
missioner Watehorn and the physi
cians at the hospital, immediately
after her discharge sho was taken on
a special boat to tho Pennsylvania
station In Jersey City, thero to board
tho first train for tho south. It was
said, however, that sho would stop
over for a few days In Newark with
a family that has offered to bofrlond
hor. Onco In Now Orleans she will
contlnuo to work as a canvacser.
