Rough Weather Prevented
Government Men From In
vestigating It Closely.
PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 8. The
Telegram says: "Until he makes his
report to Washington officials, Cap
tain Pond will not disclose the con
clusion he has reached concerning the
establishment of a lighthouse at Or
ford Reef. In company with Major
Mclndoe, the lighthouse Inspector
has returned from a trip down the
coast. On account of the rough
weather, a landing could not he ef
fected at Orford Reef and as close an
inspection of the proposed location
as desired could not be made. The
cruise was made on the tender
Heather.
"But we completed as close an In
spection as possible," said Captain
Pond. "The Cape Blanco light sta
tion was also inspected, as well as
those at Cape Arago and Tillamook
Hock. Supplies were delivered and
the regular routine work in that part
of the district was looked after."
Navigation interests, particularly
those operating coasters, are deeply
concerned about the probability of
the establishment of an additional
lighthouse in the vicinity of Cape
Blanco. During a big part of every
year the fog Is so thick as to obscure
the light at Blanco, and it has long
been thought that much better re
sults could be secured with a station
In commission at Orford Reef. It is
farther seaward and Is not wrapped
in fog so often as the stretch of land
forming the main coast line.
"Captain Pond will leave for Asto
ria for the purpose of superintending
the establishment of range lights
on Sand Island. A contract for their
being put in place has been let by
the government, but the inspector
wants to make certain that the task
is properly performed. The beacons
are designated as the front and rear
lights. The former will be 25 feet
high and the latter 43 feet, and they
will be 1000 feet apart. They are
being established for the purpose of
affording a range to the pilots who
are bringing vessels from the out
Bide into the river. The ship chan
nel is lined with buoys, lu:t It Is often
difficult to see these during thick
weather. The pilots requested the
placing of range lights on Sand Is
land some months ago."

Puter, the land-fraud artist, Is In
Washington to lnduco the adminis

Puter fears the government may fail
in its efforts to cancel patents to
$1,500,000 worth of timber now
claimed by C. A. Smith, of Minnea
polis, unless Honey is given charge
of the cases In court. Ho says that
District Attorney McCourt has so
many other mntters on hand that ho
cannot glvo this caso proper atten

Garflold in Honey's behalf, but failed
to obtain an audience. Ho will re

Mr. Puter said: "Smith, who Is1

farther west of Roseburg than the
last one. There is absolutely no clue
to the thief.
Sheriff Fenton, to whom the lone
bandit sent his regards, was at the
scene within a short time after the
holdup and a number of posses
searched the surrounding country:
Mr. Fenton prior to his election as
sheriff owned and operated the
stage line, but 3old it sometime ago.
Evidently the robber was not aware
of the sale of the stage line when
he sent his regards to the sheriff.
While the stage robber did not
touch the mall, it is likely that the
government men will be placed on
the case.
Owing to the dense timber In this
section, it is difficult to track any
criminals. An effort was made to
day to secure blood hounds to place
on the trail.

DEER HIDES
GO TO WASTE
Over 1,000 Stored In Cabin
On .Curry County Claim By
Various Hunters.
WEDDERBURN, Or., Oct. S. The
Radium says: "Charles S. Masters,
Robert Forty and Mr. Hughes re
turned Monday from a hunting trip
into the country southeast of Wed
derburn. They went to the neighbor
hood where Col. 3Iuncy's mines are
located and lodged in the house be
longing to 3Ir. 3Iuncy. They arrived
Friday afternoon and spent Satur
day and Sunday in the surrounding
country. On Saturday morning they
killed three deer, each of the party
securing one. Afterwards they saw
but two more, and did not get either.
They dried most of the meat, but
brought some back, part of which 3Ir.
Masters forwarded to his wife at
Coos Bay. A portion was served
Monday evening at the Bay View
hotel. An Interesting thing was re
ported by Mr. JIasters. The terri
tory they visited is considerpd good
hunting grounds, and the house they
occupied is crammed with deer hides,
estimated by Mr. Masters at con
siderably over a thousand. These, it
is believed, represent an accumula
tion of years, it being the custom of
hunters to dress their meat on the
ground, and rather than throw the
hides away, store them in the house
that they might be of use to some
body. In this manner of thinking
out economy, the various hunters
have from year to year accumulated
a stock of hides which would Incite
the suspicions of a game warden
should he accidentally stumble on
the hoard. Whether the hides have
any value is questionable, since they
are mostly moth eaten, and whether
they could be handled and marketed
without entangling the man who at
tempted It in the meshes of the law,
Is likewise doubtful."

A CURE FOR RHEU3IATIS3I.
Each recurring attack of rheuma
tism makes the disease harder to
control, but the fact that it is not
In Itself dangerous causes people to
neglect it, awaiting a change or a
settled condition of the weather for
relief. It is often only after the dis
ease has become so serious as to in
terfere with business that the suf
ferer will seek more than temporary
relief. Chamberlain's Liniment is a
remedy for rheumatism which any
one can apply. It not only gives
prompt relief from pain, but in a
largo majority of cases it brings
about permanent results. The first
application will surprise and delight
you as immediate relief Is almost
sure to follow. " For sale by JOHN
