ers tho first of tho week alleging that
they had been hunting without a li
cense, In violation of tho law, and
brought them to town. Tho matter
of prosecution was presented t6 Dis
trict Attorney Liljeqvlst who was of
tho opinion that tho case would como
under tho jurisdiction of tho Curry
county authorities. Anyway the mat
ter was allowed to drop temporarily
and tho boys were permitted to re
turn home."

Not Enough Sunday Schools Ex
hibit at Seattlo Exposition.
SALEM, Ore., Sept. 28. "Of 160,
,00Q school children between tho ages
of 4 and 20 years In Oregon, 100,
000 do not go to Sunday school," was
tho statement made by Dr. G. A.
Blake, representative of the Sunday
school board of tho general confer
ence, before tho Oregon Methodists
In annual conference here. Tho
speaker said (further that there were
2,200 school districts in Oregon and
in 1300 of them there wero no Sun
day schools of any denomination.
In his arraignment of conditions
In Oregon, Dr. Blake said tho Meth
odists wero behind the Presbyterians
and the Congregationallsts in this
work. He said six men wero In tho
Held working for the Presbyterian
home missions in Oregon, which In
cluded Sunday school organization.
The Congregationallsts also had a
largo number doing the same work
in Washington and Oregon. Tho
Methodists had none.
Tho Methodists of tho northwest
will spend $5,000 to establish and
maintain an exhibit at the Alaska-Yukon-Paclflc
exposition to be held
at Seattlo next summer, showing tho
growth and work of Methodism. Tho
matter was taken up at tho session
of th6 Oregon annual conference this
morning and heartily Indorsed.

has authority to declaro a forfeiture
of that portion of tho unsold lands
granted to tho Oregon & California
railroad, by act of congress, for tho
purchaso of which they have made
regular application as provided in
said act, 628 residents of the state
of Oregon have petitioned tho court
to allow thorn to lnterveno in tho
case of the United States against
that company for tho recovery 'of
lands alleged to have a valuo of
$40,000,000.
The petitioners aro Btandlng on
tho fact that each of them made duo
application for the acquisition of not
more than 160 acres and offered tho
railroad company $2.50 an aero In
payment. Tho railroad is alleged to
have refused to accept tho price, but
It is claimed that tho persons who
made tho offers In good faith acquir
ed an estate Interest, and now stand
ready to settle upon and Improvo the
tracts of land selected. It Is alleged
that tho act of congress intended
that the land should become of uso
to tho people who desired to bo resi
dents thereon, and that when they
mado bona fldo offers to purchaso
they fully complied with tho require
ments of the law In so far as they
wero ablo to do so. Attorneys A. C.
Woodcock, of Eugene, D. R. Mur
phy, of Portland, and E. L. C. Far
rln of Marshfleld, aro representing
all of tho petitioners. They say this
action will avoid a multiplicity of
suits If tho court allows them to sub
mit their caso. They ask that tho
court shall enter an order requiring
tho company to accept tho paymont
of $2,50 per aero and issue deeds.
Tho caso involved is that of tho
United States vs. the Oregon & Cali
fornia Railroad and others, wherein
it is alleged that tho terms of the
grants by congress of certain alter
nate sections of land have been vio
lated by tho action of tho company
In that It is said tho company has
sold tracts of more than 160 acres
and for larger prices than $2.50 an
acre.
