THE ABIDING.
TJAIN and pleasure both decay;
1 Wealth and poverty depart;
Wisdom makes a longer stay.
Therefore bo thou wise, my heart.
LAND remains not, nor do they
Who tho lands today control.
Kings and princes pass away.
Therefore bo thou fixed, my bouU
IF by hatred, love or prldo
Thou art shaken, thou art wrong.
Only one thing will abide
Only goodness can be strong.
Richard Henry Stoddard.
IX THE GOOD OM) DAYS.
Sometimes we think nowadays
that w are too bitter and uncharit
able in our politics, but even our
test efforts to be intolerant and un
wind are decidedly amateurish when
they are contrasted with the real vin-
dictlvoness of olden times.
For instance, when Andrew Jack
son was elected to the presidency a
second timo In 1832, opposition
.newspapers openly expressed the
.hope that he might be removed by
death before his inauguration. "Yet
there is one comfort left," said the
Boston Courier In discussing the
misfortune that It believed had be-
tfallen the country In Jnckson's vic
tory. "God has promised that the
tdays of tho wicked shall be short; tho
"wicked (meaning Jackson) is old
and feeble and may die before he can
be Inaugurated. It is the duty of
every good Christian to pny to our
3Iaker to have pity on us."
In 183C, when Van Huron was a
candllato through the dictation and
domination of Jackson,, and the
wretched affair of the deposit of na
tional treasury funds in various
banks over tho country was a red
hot issue, another anti-Jackson and
.anti-Van Huron newspaper declared
viciously: "Are bribery and the
spoils of the nation to be he'd up
.as the only inducements for Ameri
can politicians? If so, let the ruf
ilan violators of decency and honor,
now rioting over their pray, draw
their daggers and immolate the re
jpubllc at once."
After all, "the good old days" are
largely Imaginary, and they do not
compare fnvorably with these rare
now days of the present. The world
has progressed. Men are not yot
perfect, but they are at least more
.cliarltablo In politics. These are
somo of tho impressions one gains
Ifrom reading historical chronicles of
campaigns of the past.
You also find in them encourage
ment, not to worry nbout the state of
the Tuition or to take your politics too
sorioufdy. Hack In 1S32, when the
lirc-ia boldly expressed the hope thnt
.Andy Jackson, "tho Wicked," might
dii ratliur than see his ndmlnlstra
ftlan policies continued, nearly half
of tho people thought tho country
was going to tho dcmnltion bow
wows. But it didn't. It came
through thnt crisis and still othor
.and greater ones. Of course n "don't
.care" attitude must not bo assumed
Un political matters, but men ought
to bo optimists rather than pessimists.
When AVe Are Parted.
When we are parted, let me lie
In some iar corner of thy heart,
Silent, and from the world apart,
Like a forgotten melody;
Forgotten of the world beside,
Cherished by one, and one alone,
For some loved memory of its own;
So let me in thy heart abide
When we are parted.
When we are parted, keep for me
The sacred stillness of the night;
That hour, sweet love, Is mine by
right,
Let others claim tho day of thee!
The cold world sleeping at our feet,
My spirit shall discourse with
thine
When stars upon thy pillow shine,
At thy heart's door I stand and beat,
Though we are parted.

REPORT OF THE CONDITION
of the
FIRST NATIONAL BANK
Some homes on Coos Bay would
be mighty pleasant places If Is were
not for the people who live in them.
If heaven is the home of some peo
ple who claim it Is, all I can say Is
that they are a blamed long way
from homo.
Although leap year is nearly gone,
'Tis very plain to see
Nobody's made an effort yet
To
Kidnap
Me.
It is said that God made man In
his own Image, but looking at some
of tho specimens It would seem that
the pattern has been warped considerably.
Tho present Is a good time for
Coos Bay people to get together.
The deuce is the smallest card in
the dock but four of them in ono
hand are mighty hard to beat.
Smile, Pal o' Mine.
Smile, pal o' mine, for the world
is ours.
What if n thorn bo among3t tho
flowers,
Thorns but teach us over again
The old, old lpsson of pleasure and
pain.
Life Is a queer old thing at best,
Wp laugh and weep then Ho down
to rest
So smile, pal o' mine.
