A CURE FOR RHEUJLVTISM.
Each recurring attack of rheuma
tism makes the disease harder to
control, but tho fact that it is not
in itself dangerous causes people to
neglect It, awaiting a change or a
settled condition of the weather for
relief. It is often only after the dis
ease has become so serious as to in
terfere with business that tho suf
ferer will seek more than temporary
relief. Chamberlain's Liniment Is a
remedy for rheumatism which any
one can apply. It not only gives
prompt relief from pain, but in a
largo majority of cases It brings
about permanent .results. Thq first
application will surprise and delight
you as immediate relief Is almost
sure to follow. For sale by JOHN

No Substitute In Work World
For Sterling Common Sense.
By JOHN A. HOWL AND, Chlcnflo Journalist.
SE your brains if you have any! Failing in this n few

tako tho initiativo in tho world's work. Then it will bo
timo enough for you to lino up with tho army of tho unem

AT A TIME WHEN MORE ADVICE TO THE YOUNG MAN IS
PRINTED THAN EVER BEFORE IN HISTORY IT STRIKES ME THAT
THIS MODERN YOUNG MAN NEEDS MORE THAN EVER BEFORE
TO GET HIS OWN BEARINGS UPON HIMSELF IN RELATION TO
HIS PARTICULAR WORK. THE WHOLE EQUATION IS PERGONAL
AND SPECIFIC. GENERALITIES COVERING RULES OF CONDUCT
ACCORDING TO CONVENTIONAL CATECHISMS MAY BE WORTH
LESS. THEY MAY BE EVEN CONFUSING AND MISLEADING.
The situation is that tho young man has work before him. With.,
certain modifications, perhaps, ho is tho man to do it. Tho employer
aska only that tho work bo dono satisfactorily.
I read tho other day a catechismic dissertation upon how every
young man may succeed in life. It was in effect thaf, having true
courage, this young man would recognizo no obstacle in his way as un
surnxountablo ; that, having no fear of failure, ho would press on al
ways to tho accomplishment of anything ho might attempt to do.
Fundamentally I DON'T KNOW OF ANYTHING SILLIER
than tho promulgating of any such philosophy as this. That young
man who gets such a distorted idea into his head, bclioving it to be of
practical, everyday valuo to him, must find DISAPPOINTMENT .
AND FAILURE INEVITABLE. Thero aro a million common-'
placo things in business life that aro impossible. Things that wero
possiblo yesterday aro impossiblo today, and things possiblo today will1
bo impracticable tomorrow.
"Learn to obey orders" is ono of tho old reiterations of the con
ventional teacher who fancies that an idealized philosophy should
apply to cvory relation in tho life of tho employee. Yet thero aro men (
oyory day losing positions because of a fool's obedience to tho lottor of'
a rule.
Timo was when an office boy would have been discharged if ho had1
not untied carefully tho twino binding a packago and carefully pre
served both string and paper. Today tho boy who can cut tho wrap
pings from bjcIi a packago and drop them deepost in a wastobaskot in
tho shortest timo n- voa his ofiicicnoy.
THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE IN THE WORKING VORLD FOR A
STERLING COMMON SENSE. THERE IS NO COUHAGE TO COMPARE
WITH THAT WHICH MAY BE DISPLAYED BY THE YOUNG MAN
WHO SAYS TO HIMSELF, "I'LL GIVE THIS UP RIGHT HERE," AND
WHO AFTERWARD CAN JUSTIFY HIS MOVE.
Mahan, who threatened suit to en
join recognition of passes, proposes
to mako the members of the board
account for tho value of the tickets
they gave away.
At Eugene, the Lucky Boy mino
was sold on execution to satisfy
claims. Tho only bidders were Corn
Sengstakcn nnd E. A. Lyman, and it
was knocked off to them at their
bid for $131,647.27. Just why this
particular sum was bid was not
known by tho officers, but it was
largely In excess of the judgments
against it, and it is said the parties
bidding represent the Title Guaran
tee & Trust Company, and that tho
amount bid was necessary from the
stockholders standpoint. It Is also
said that this property is to bo re
organized.
Fred Morgan, of Jackson county,
while stopping at a creek to let his
horso drink, wns bitten In tho hand
by a rattlesnake, which ho killed.
It was as thick as a man's arm, 5
feet long and had five rattles. It
took five hours for Morgan to get to
Ashland, but ho had tightly bandag
ed his arm. His finger was cut to
let tho poisoned blood drop out, and
three pints of whiskey in his stomach
and one pint Injected failed to mako
him drunk, and strychnine was ad
ministered all night. Exnctly a week
before, ho had fallen 3D feet down,
a well, and escaped barely in timo
to miss a blast of dynamite. Peoplo.
up there arc wondering what Is go
ing to happen to Morgan next.
Indian war veterans of both Ore
gon and Washington will use their
influence again this winter in an
effort to secure the passage of a bill
through tho Washington legislature,
allowing tho gray haired survivors
of early frontier battles ?2 per day
for past services. At the present
tlmo all tho remuneration received
by the remaining handful of men
who risked their HVes 50 years ago
for advancing civilization, Is tho $8
per month federal pension. Congress,
however, did not pass tho pension
bill until 1902, and it was a year
later before any benefits wero re
ceived from it. Now tho Washington
legislators will bo asked to reward
the few veterans still living a wage
of $2 per diem for the time they
wero in actual service on tho frontier.
