the local coal bunkers.

Smith Is due In today from San
Francisco and will load at the Smith
mill immediately with lumber for
Bay Point.
Roscoo In. Tho L. Roscoe came
down yesterday to securo supplies
for the Gardiner cannery and also
merchandise for Gardiner stores.
She did not bring down any cargo.
Kustsiilc Schools Open. The
Eastsido schools started in on the
second week of tho fall term this
weok with a good attendance. The
enrollment Is considerably more than
a year ago.
Lower Floors. Tho P. K. saloon
at Front and 'A' streets, Is being re
modelled as a result of tho necessity
of lowering tho floors to conform
with the now street grade which was
established when the paving was
put in.
Council to Meet. Tonight is tho
regular meeting night of tho Marsh
fleld city council. As no session was
held last week, it is expected that
there will bo considerable routine
business, Including street Improve
ments, to bo taken up.
Will Pave 'A' Street. Tho prop
erty owners on 'A' street, between
Front and Second street, havo signed
for bituminous rock paving, and Con
tractor McCann will shortly begin
excavating in order to comploto tho
street before tho rainy season.
Will Hunt Elk. Tho season for
killing elk opens next Tuesday, 15th,
and will remain open only two weeks.
No hunter is permitted to kill more
than one elk. Half a dozen or more
of our best hunters havo gono over
to tho head waters of Coos rlvor,
where it is said a flno largo herd of
those big monarchs of tho forest has
been ranging for many years. Drain

response to a message announcing
the critical illness of her mother.
