DRAIN'S VIEW OF ROAD.
The Drain Nonpareil says: "The
Coos Bay committee rode on Uncle
JEd Harrlman's special train from
iRorebnrg to Eugene last Saturday
Tand fully discussed the subject of
resumption of work on the Draln
Coos Bay road. Harriman pretended
Jthat he was uncertain just when ho
would order tho work completed,
lie said ho would make the order
at once, provided tho committee
could show him where It would bo
aiossiblo for him to earn 4 per cent
.interest on the $5,000,000 it will
Inko to build the road, for ten years
irom tho date of completion.
The committee Is sure they can
'come through with this showing, so
It would not be any great surprise if
'work should resume yet this fall.
But It is our guess that nothing
will bo done before next spring.
With one million dollars' worth
of steel bridge material piled at
TJraln, mndo expressly for this road;
-with five magnificent steel bridges
already put up at this end of the
Ulne, with a greater portion of the
grading done for a distance of 20
imlles; with nearly 200,000 barrels of
-cement scattered all along tho lino;
with nearly lmlf of the work done on
ttho four only tunnels on tho route;
with right of way paid for moro
1 -than half of tho distance, it is safo
xto conclude that this work will not
Tba allowed to lag much longer. It
would bo too unreasonable to con
sider for a moment.
Tho Coos Bay spirit Is tho thing
-fto iimlco tho growler got away from
liimsolf. Movo In there's room If you
liurry.
' Its easy to get happiness out of
your work when you're holping to
Ibuild nnd boost Coos Bay.

Sit Down, Sad-Soul.
Sit down, sad soul, and count
The moments flying;
Come- tell the sweet amount
How many smiles? a score?
Then laugh, and count no more,
For day Is dying.
Lie down, sad soul and sleep,
And no more measure
The flight of time, nor weep
The loss of leisure;
But here, by this lone stream,
Lie down with us, and dream
Of starry treasure.
Wo dream do thou the same;
We love forever;
We laugh, yet few we shame
The gentle, never,
Stay then, till Sorrow dies;
Then hope and happy skies
Are thine forever!
BRYAN W. PROCTER.
To be lionized by the ambitious
woman and sheep's-eyes-ed by the
sentimental that is famo of a sort.
It's a mighty good rule of health
which can't be overpractlced and
brought Into discredit by its fool
friends.
Tho efforts a Coos Bay girl makes
to And out who her husband will be
a married woman makes to And out
where her's Is.
When a woman cannot relorm a
man his salvation Is Impossible;
when sho cannot destroy him his
destruction is impossible.
Ino man who does little else but
talk of his wonderful accomplish
ments of the past will not do any
thing startling in the future.
If you were put up on an auction
eer's block and sold, as they sold
slaves in the old days, how much do
you suppose you would bring.
Every baby is the sweetest baby in
tho world. You were once consid
ered the sweetest thing in tho world,
although you may not look It now.
Every Coos Bay woman believes
that if her husband couTd bo mar
ried to some other woman a week ho
would know better how to appreciate
her.
Somehow, when you see a woman
who hns been married and divorced
a number of times wo are rumindecf
of tho man who is always failing In
business.
It would bo an exaggeration to
say that there was a woman at tin?
beach who is so red-headed" that
when sho goes In bathing you can
hear tho water sizzle.
