Tom Boot Discovers Traces Near
Myrtle Point.
Tom Root, who lives across the
river, brought to this office this weok
a chunk of greenish colored clay that
smells as though it had been soaked
in a barrel of coal oil for a month,
but he declared that It had been
freshly dug from the earth and that
the place where It was dug smelled
so strongly like crude petroleum that
it waB a showing of force of mind
over matter to keep a person's olfac
tory nerves In the near vicinity. It is
possible that the stuff Is not satu
rated with oil, but It smells enough
like It to be so,, and its general char-
rcter would seem to warrant a thor
ough scientific test. If it is oil, it id
but another evidence that coal, oil
and gas underlie this vicinage In a
manner that will warrant thorough
investigation. Myrtle Point
