the Goodwill ranch on Coos River
today. Mr. Dow will return Mon
day but Mrs. Dow and the children
will remain there several days.
Race Entries Close Tonight. The
entiles for race No. 12 In the Second
Southern Oregon District Fair meet
will close tonight. The race Is a
half mile running event for Coos
county four-j ear-olds.

man has placed a Gravensteln apple
measuring several Inches in circum
ference on exhibit at the Chamber of
Commerce. W. H. Smith has also
placed some unusually fine Royal
Anne cherries on exhibit there.
M. B. TRUE arrived from Spokane,
yesterday for a short visit with his
brother, F. C. True on Coos Bay.
They will leave here about Sep
tember for a month's visit at their
old home near Council Bluffs, la.
DR. ANDREW C. SMITH of Port
land, formerly a member of the
Oregon legislature, will arrive the
latter part of next week to visit
Dr. J. T. McCormac and also to
take part in the Oregon-Idaho De
velopment congress.
MISS BABE CARTER, who has been
visiting her father, Thos Carter,
left today on the Breakwater for
her home in Spokane. During her
short stay on the Bay she has
made many friends who regret her
departure.
Launch Is Smimped. A fishing
launch belonging to Matt Ericson was
swamped near the Breakwater dock
last night and probably badly dam
aged. An effort will be made to
raise it today. The launch was tied
to a piling and evidently caught on a
projection when the tide went out.

neral services of Mrs. Richard Howell

Horsfall at M. J. Mangan's Under
taking parlors on Broadway, Monday

Fornshall of Salem, arrived here this
morning. The body will be sent to

Excused From Retreat. The Rev.
Father Curley today received a tele
gram from Archbishop Christie of
Portland, excusing him from tho an
nual retreat of the priests of this dio
cese which opens in Portland Mon
day. In consequence, the Rev. Fath
er Curley will bo able to remain hero
to celebrate mass tomorrow. The
Rev. Father E. Donnelly, who is on
route home from the east, will bo in
Portland for the retreat.
Pleasure Party Delayed. A num
ber of Marshfield young people who
attended the dnnctng party at tho
Chandler summer home on Coos
River, last evening, had a rather dis
agreeable experience en route home.
The engine of the launch Merrimac
refused to work after they got part
way down the river and It was several
hours before the engine got in work
ing order again and It was morning
before they reached Marshfield.

number of Marshfield and North
Bend peoplo will journey to Coqullle
and Bandon on tho M. W. A. excur
sion train tomorrow. The train is
scheduled to leavo hero at 7 o'clock
