SEEK OIL SI
ifflLE POiil
BUSINESS MEN ORGANIZE TO IX-
VESTIGATE EVIDENCE OF BIG
DEPOSITS IX VALLEY.
COQUILLE, Ore, Aug. 8. The
Coqullle Sentinel says: "An Inform
al meeting of some of the citizens of
JMyrtle Point and vicinity was held
Lt the office of the Myrtle Point Mill
.company for the purpose of discuss
ing the project of prospecting for oil
3n the vicinity of the town and on the
tributaries of the Coquille river. A
gentleman late of Colorado by the
name of Kerns, was present, In fact
the meeting was held at his recom
mendation. Mr. Kerns stated that
on examination ho had found evi
dences that oil was under the ground
rof this region and he thought there
-was sufficient indication to prospect
for that Important fluid.
P. L. Phalen was electfd chairman
of the matins pnd Orvil uodge sec
retary. The latter was- appointed
a comniit--f of one to see about ob
taining leases of grounds for opera
tion, upon which the meeting ad
journed to meet at the call of the
chairman. There were about a doz
en persons present, or represented.
PIPE IT TO COOS HAY.
Mr. Kerns was well informed on
the subject of oil anl oil fields, and
.he confirms the expression of other
geologists, as well as government
reports to the effect that underlay
ing Myrtle Point is a vast coal field,
with its accompanying deposits of oil
-and gas. He had found oil shale,
and investigated the gas of the Co
quille river west of town. He says
the ga3 is undoubtedly natural ga
and explains the difference between
ithat and the gas that comes from de
caying vegetation. This bursts into
tlame with a little explosion when a
match is applied. He thinks that If
local .people will take the preliminary
stejis capital will take hold and de
wolop a valuable field for investment
3iere. If oil Is found in quantities
."Mr. Kern thinks that it can bo readily
joiped to Coos Bay where It would be
Joaded on tank steamers for ship
anent. The gas bubbling up from tho
.ilver has been in evidence for some
time, but the lay mind does not al
ways associate these phenomena with
evidences of valuable deposits. If it
aevelops that Myrtle Point possesses
such a natural deposit It will mean
the building of a city here when de
velopment work shows the value of it
vio- tho world.
