SUICIDE AT MEDFORD.
Wealthy Real Estate Man Ends Ills
Life.
MEDFORD, Oie., Aug. 7. Law
renee H. Besler, a wealthy real es
tate dealer of Wenatchee, Wash., ag
ed 50 years, committed suicide by
blowing off the top of his head with
a rifle In the Nash hotel, in this city.
Ho had sent for an acquaintance, and
after shaking hands with him stepped
into an alcove and ended his life. The
cause of the act is unknown. Besler
came to Medford for the purpose of
buying an orchard.
PAVING AT ROSEBURG.
City Council Orders Eighteen Blocks
Improved.
ROSEBURG, Ore., Aug. 7. Ordin
ances authorizing the paving of 18
blocks of streets and the flotation of
$35,000 worth of bonds to defray
50 per cent of the cost thereof, as
well as the total cost of a concrete
steel bridge over Deer Creek, which
runs through the northern part of
the city, were passed by the RoBe
burg council. Bids for the improve
ment work and on the bond issue
are now advertised, and it Is expected
actual paving will begin within a
month.
The Roseburg Commercial Club
jesterday awarded a contract for
erection of an advertising exhibit i
building on the Southern Pacific de
pot premises. The building will be
open to visitors during the stoppage
of all through trains passing hero in
daylight, and will be so constructed
that Its contents may be viewed from
ovory direction without entering the
building.

Marshfield thinks it has a serious
problem. People are staying away
because of tho bad streets, and busi
ness men fear that the high taxes
created by exponsivo pavement would
also keep them away. Bettor try

Reccher Appointed For Drain Saw

ROSEBURG, Ore., Aug. 7. On
petition of creditors, the Craig Lum
ber Company, and the Elk Creek
Lumber Company, Judge Hamilton
on Monday issued an order directing
the sale by the receiver of tho prop
erty of Paul M. Dimmlck, a bank
rupt, consisting of a sawmill near
Drain, a tract of timberland and a
quantity of sawed lumber. The
petitioners set forth that owing to
the slump in the lumber market the
plant was depreciated in valno dally,
and that It could not be operated
without a loss. The order of sale
authorizes It either publicly or pri

For Land Frauds.
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 7. Tho
grind of tho land-fraud cases will
bo resumed Monday, October 12,
when Mr. Becker has arranged for
tho trial of tho Pacific Furniture &
Lumber Company case. Tho trial of
this case is expected to occupy fully
four weeks, as tho government has
approximately 2,000 lotters relating
to the alleged conspiracy and which
probably will bo offered aB exhibits.
Following this case, the trial of Bln
ger Hermann will be taken up, a
postponement of this trial from the
October term for which it had been
set having been agreed to by the
government at tho request of A. S.
Worthlngton, chief counsel for Her
man, who has gono for a trip abroad
and will not return until fall.
In arranging this order of tho
cases Mr. Becker requested tho court
to set tho retrial of tho Williamson
case Immediately after tho Hermann
trial, for tho reason that If Henoy
comes to Portland to try Hermann,
which he Intended to do, ho would
deslro to retry tho Williamson case
at tho same tlmo. All of tho other
cases wero continued until tho Oc
tober term, no definite date being sot
for any of them.

TROUBLE IS SERIOUS.
Cjipt. Robert Cnuglicll Faces Severe
Charge.
Tho Coqullle Herald says: "Cap
tain Robert Caughell, well-known in
Curry county and along tho coast of
Coos, Is in trouble at Eureka, Cali
fornia, according to reports. Ho had
a serious mlx-up with G. R. George
son, a prominent and wealthy citizen
, of that city, whom ho accused of
making improper advances to his
young wife, and on whom he Inflicted
a terrible beating. Caughell, who
has been employed of late as master
of tho ferry steamdr Antolopo plying
on Humboldt Bay, sought to forco
Goorgeson to sign a wrltton confes
sion of his guilt at the point of a re
volver, lead to the personal encounter
and Georgeson's serious injury.
Coughell was arrested and placed
under $5,0000 hounds."

Pettlhone, for years prominent In
the councils of the Western Federa
tion of Labor and charged with
President Moyer and ex-Secretary
W. D. Haywood with complicity in
the murder of ex-Govornor Stounen
horg, of Idaho, died at St. Joseph's
hospital from tho effects of an opera
tion fdr cancer. Mr. Pcttibono had
been ill practically ever since his con
finement In the Idaho penitentiary,
which began moro than a. year pre
vious to. tho famous trials at Boise.
Pettlhone was tried and acquitted.
He leaves a widow.

Jack, a collie owned by James Mad
drah of Hubbard street, recovered a
valuable pin which had been lost In
tho woods and roturnod it to its own
er, Miss Ida Maddrab, oldest daugh
ter of hla master.
Miss Maddrah lost tho pin, which
was a gift, while hunting for wild
flowers with her little niece on a
mountain side Sunday. She did not
discover her loss until that night, and
yesterday started out with Jack in
quest of tho pin. Hnlf way up tho
hillside the dog found the pin and
brought It to Miss Maddrah in hla
mouth.
