ent," He Tells Artist.

Lazzlo, tho famous Hungarian artist
who recently painted a portrait of
King Edward and still more recently
one of President Roosevelt, has given
to tho Pall Mail Gazette some inter
esting details of his experiences at
the White House in Washington.
Lazzlo seems to have been im
pressed most of all with Mr. Roose
velt's great love for his wife. "No
thing could he more touching," the
artist declares, at the outset of his
interview.
During one of the sitting Lazzlo
asked tho President what he intends
to do when his term of office ex
pires. The President said "impossible!"
to a suggestion that he might enter
the Sonate adding:
"I think the people will forget me.
The spirit of the American Nation
changes from day to day. In six or
seven years the feeling will be very
different from what itjs today. I
shall have been forgotten, although
I shall never change."
Before leaving London for Wash
ington the artist was told by King
Edward that he was going to "paint
one of the most interesting men of
the twentieth century."
The President was greatly inter
ested in Lazzlo's acounts of the King,
whose tact Mr. Roosevelt praised,
saying that Edward VII, is the great
est of all diplomats, accomplishing
great things in his unostentatlouu
visits to foreign capitals.

man at the Coquille river station,
and to report for duty July 31st.
Mr. Fox's percentage at the examin
ation was high, being 97 80-100.
Rev. John Thomas and his wife,
leave this week for Bandon where
they will make their future home.
Mr. Thomas and wife have made
many friends while they have been
residents of this city, and we wish
them succes In their new home.
J. P. Easter of Ashland arrived
in tho city Monday for a month's
visit with his sister, Mrs. M. O.
Hooton, and family. The gentleman
will be remembered by the older
residents as ho practiced medicine
in this city about ten years ago. He
notes many changes in the time that
he has been absent from Coquille.
Eighteen year's experience has

Strange Little Insect Is Making
Victims Too Lazy to
Breathe.
MT. VERNON, N. Y., July 31.
How would you like to have "tho
lazy disease," now that tho thermo
meter is hovering about 90 degrees?
Its first symptom is a distaste for
work. The victim gets that "tired
feeling," and gets it badly. Ho
doesn't want to do anything but Just
sit around and rest. Finally ho bo
comes unable to move hand or foot.
There Is little discomfort. Ono
Just lazies along until one day ho
fiinds It altogether too much trouble
to keep on breathing and ho shuffles
off this mortal coil without a sigh
of regret. It's an easy finish.
A littlo hookworm, which gets Into
the blood and feeds upon tho red
corpuscles, causes tho trouble. It's a
busy little worm and multiplies with,
amazing speed.

A peculiar feature of the diseaso
is that in its advanced stage it leaves
tho patient's flesh almost wax-like In
its whiteness.
The disease is practically unknown
In the United States. The physicians
call it uclnarlosis, and talk of, it in
seven-syllabled words. But down in
Brazil, where it Is almost epidemic,
in some localities, it's plain "lazy dis
ease." Five In One Family. '"
Guiseppe Mascla, an Italian who
came here some months ago from,
Brnzil, has developed the disease.
Four of his ten children have it rilso.
The health authorities have takostv
the family in charge and isolated,
them in tents at Mt. Vernon hospital.
Mascla Is a shoemaker. He open
ed up a little shop, but he Just could
n't work. Customers came In and
protested, but Mascla only shrugged
his shoulders. It was too much,
trouble to argue. He would do tho
work, but ho must have time.
His children worked in tho factor
ies. They couldn't keep up with,
their fellow workers, but it wasn't
their fault. Their hands were heavy,
their feet leaden. Finally they lost
their Jobs.
When Mascla went to a .physician
his case puzzled the man of medicine.
The usual remedies failed. Finally
Dr. L. B. Goldhorn, a pathologist
who had become familiar with tho
"lazy disease" while studying in Ger
many, was called into consultation.
He mado an examination of tha
blood of each member of tho family.
Each sample showed the prnsence ot
tho pestiferous, little, blood-thirsty
hookwork. Tho health authorities
took action Immediately.
Although the Mascla children
mingled freely with the littlo ones
of tho neighborhood it is not believ
ed serious results will follow. In
Brazil the contagion usually come3
from an Infected water supply. This
is not feared here.
Tho United States quarantine offi
cials are Interested in the case. It
may be that the family will bo deported.
