field city council will meet tonight
to take up a number of street Im
provement matters.
Sing at Fair. Prof. E. A. Todd is
organizing a children's chorus to pre
sent several numbers at the South
ern Oregon District Fair to be held
here in August.
Gets a Deer. John Yoakam re
turned today from a brief deer hunt
In which he succeeded In getting all
the venison he desired. Lest Dr.
Dlx might get ambitious to duplicate
Dr. Housoworth's stunt, Mr. Yoakam
presented him a fine pair of horns.

glas hns returned from the beach
near the light-house where he has
taken his family for a few weeks
camping. He says that there are
a large number of campers there.
The blackberry crop In that vicinity
Is said to be the best known in many
seasons.

er T. J. Lewis has decided that the
part of a human skeleton found on
the beach near Empire yesterday was
the remains of someone who had
been buried near tho sea soveral
years or"" more ago. The vertebra
and ribs had been in tho water but
a short time. He decided not to
make any' further investigation and
had the bones burled.
Leo Matson 111. Mrs. E. S. Bar
golt received a telegram this morn
ing announcing that Leo A, Matson,
a brother of Mrs. Bargelt and J. Al
bert Matson, had been taken sud
denly ill at Spokane. Mr. Matson
spent the winter in California and
wont north, Intending to spend 'the
summer In Idaho, recently. The na
ture of his illness is not given and
Mrs. Bargelt Is planning to go to
Spokane at once.

firm. Nick says, "ho thinks he

MR. and MRS. BALES and nephew,
S. C. Dezier of Portland, arrived
on the City of Panama for a week's
visit. They are tho guests of Mr.
and Mrs. Gus. L. Ferry, Sr., and
Miss Hattie Ferry. Mr. Bales haa
been on the mounted police service
for three years In Portland, Miss
Hattie made headquarters with
them while attending St. Helen's
Hall.

A pleasure party consisting of Mr.
BALES and P. C. DOZIER of
Portland, chaperoned by Jas. L.
Henry, Jr., and brother George,
left for a hunting and fishing trip
on the ranch and wooded timber
of Jas, L. Ferry, St., at the head
of Isthmus Slough, The boys are
desirous of entertaining Mr. Bales
and show him the scenic contin
gents to our bay and streams. Ho
will probably observe that there
are other places of so callod cul
ture outings beyond Portland and
its suburbs.
MR. OLE BENTSON, a former prom
inent Ton Mile rancher and who,
eight yenrs ago, sold his ranch
there to C. P. Coleman, is here" on
a visit to the old scenes. Mr. Bent
son since selling out hero has lived
and owns property at Morgan Hill,
Santa Clara county, Cal where ho
has made n specialty of fruit rais
ing as ho did hero. Ho wbb large

deavors in tho establishing of tho
Lake Crenmory. Ills old place Is
still called tho Bentson prong of
tho Lake. Ho says he regrets leav
