PORTLAND, July 14. More than
a dozen disconsolate, disgusted and
victimized would-be tlmberlnnd buy
ers cluttered the lobby outside the
oillce of United States District Attor
ney John McCourt Thursday.
Each one had been buncoed for not
less than $200 and two were stung
to the tune of $400.
Back of their appearance Is the
wellworn story of tllmflammed people
who desired to acquire some of Ore
gon's heavily timbered acres In the
Willamette Vallej . It is not the first
time the authorities have heard the
tale, and may not be the last, but
McCourt and Assistant United States
District Attorney Walter E. Evans
arc now starting the machinery of
the government in motion to see If
the swindlers cannot be brought to
justice. J. C. Burke and O. M. Staf
ford are to be haled before the Unit
ed States Commissioner to find what
they know about making false affi
davits on timber claims.
According to Mr. McCourt, the
victims were taken to a fine quarter-
section of timber, told this was the
quarter-section they were being lo
cated on, and then were given a
quarter-section many miles away to
file on. By questioning various vic
tims. Mr. Evans discovered that sev
eral were shown the same fine-
looking body of timber aud then lo
cated on a burn. In one or two in
stances, the mouumeut had been
tampered with, &o that when the tiiu-ber-buer
was shown the monument
aud while trees, they agreed with
the reeorded. It is a serious mat
ter to change the UMrklags oa the
woaMHMHts. but it is difficult to ob
tain NUiMuw, as a maa who alters
tk markings is not likely to do so
waea there are eye-wiiaesges.
Within the pt two months over
49 people a called oa the United
Stats District Attorney to complain.
They came from Portland. Salem.
