llrlngs Encouraging News of Pros-
nects For Coos liny Coal Hriqiictte
Company.
W. A. Thles, the mechanical en
gineer who Is interested In the German-American
Coal-Briquet Com
pany, whose plans contemplate a
plant on Coos Bay, returned on the
M. F. Plant from Los Angoles, Cal
whero he went In a professional capa
city to advise as to the Installation
of Irrigation machinery. Mr. Thles
Investigated fuel conditions In Cali
fornia whllo away and has a better
Idea than ever of the exceptional re
sources and opportunities of this part
of Oregon. He found that the Tesla
and Stockton briquet plants were
making, big money on a very poor
quality of coal and a briquet which
required a binder. Ho declares that
Coos Bay has a sure future In the
manufacture of briquets and that the
men who doubt the ability of sclenco
to make the slack of the lignite coal
into briquets are very greatly mis
taken and way behind the times. The
Tesla briquets, ho says, aro not to
be spoken of In tho samo breath
with thoso of Franco and Germany,
and aro not comparable with thoso
which wore mado In Minneapolis by
Win. Tho reporter reminded him of
tho claim ho had heard that tho
United States navy would refit all
tholr war vessels for tho uso of oil.
Mr. Thles laughed. "Oil will do
very woll for light commercial ves
sels. In war-it is different. Ydii
don't want your war vessels equip
ped with a tank which will burst and
explode your vessel the moment a
shell touches It." Mr. Thles spent a
part of his time, while studying his
profession in Germany, In the Ger
man navy and Is particularly well in
formed on the subject of naval equip1
mont. "War vessels will novor use
oil, on any large scale," said he, "and
tho United States government is more
anxious about this briquet proposi
tion than about oil anywhere."
