Mrs. L. J. Simpson of North Bend,
who by tho way didn't go to Sau
Francisco, as had been reported, Is
entertaining a number of friends at
a house party at Ten Mile over the
Fourth. Mrs. Keating, her mother,
Mrs. Troutman and brother, Teddy,
are among her guests. Mr. Simpson
who was called to San Francisco on
business Is expected home during the
week. His sister and a friend may
accompany him back to spend tho
summer on Coos Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. Hendricks of Port
land, will occupy the McCormac resi
dence during the absence of the fam
ily at their summer home on South
Coos river. Mr. Hendricks Is archi
tect of the new Chandler hotel and
the new high school building.
There was an unexpectedly largo
turnout of Coos Bay women to tho
races In Marshfleld yesterday after
noon and It is expected that a cor
respondingly large number will bo
present this afternoon. It has been
a well-known fact that tho Coos Bay
women have been about tho best
patrons of baseball here but that
they were equal admirers of racing
"was a happy surprise to tho horse
men. Not only are they admirers but
they proved to bo good Judges of
animals as a few young men dis
covered yesterday.
There Is a well defined rumor
afloat that two Coos Bay school
ma'ams, who have been teaching at
not far distant places will soon
graduate from Cupid's college with
diplomas for life. A Roseburg min
ister's son is mentioned as one of
the favored and the long and short
of the other story Is that it Is a very
tall man and the girl well, she is
not so tall. No prizes aro offered for
successful guessers.
The marriage of Frank M. Stew
art and Miss Jessie B. Merrill at tho
home of Mr. and Mrs. Georgo Dean
Wednesday evening came as a decid
ed surprise to tho friends of the
couple. Only close relatives were in
attendance. Mr. Stewart is proprie
tor of tho Coos Bay Monumental
Works and tho bride is a well-known
Coos Bay young lady, being a daugh
ter of Mrs. L. White and a sister of
Mrs. Georgo Dean and Mrs. II. O.
Pratt. The ceremony was performed
by the Rev. D. W. Thurston of tho
First Baptist church. Tho couple
immediately went to their now homo
and have been the recipients of feli
citations from a host of friends.

- land, who is a guest of Miss Alice
McCormac, is a member of tho Sun
day staff of tho Portland Oregonlan
and ono of the promising young wri
' ters of Oregon. She recently com-

Oregon University in Eugene, and
