The One Hundred and Thirty Second Fourth
ANG! FOURTH OF JULY is with us again. Iv has been with us one
B hundred and thirty-two times and It has always been a glorious one.
. When the day closes and the noise of battle Is over, the list of dead,
dying and Injured Is made up, the nation realizes that It has had a high
old time and In a very large number of cases a close call. The most en
joyable feature of the day Is generally a hair breadth escape or two.
Last year, the list of casualties on the glorious Fourth, was not much
less than five thousand. The year before It was about the same. In the
years that have passed since the revolution, more men, women and
children have been Injured In celebrating the Fourth than all the
American armies lost In the revolution. It Is a day of terror and li
cense, a day of noise and folly, a day of disaster and" sorrow. It should
be a day of consecration and rejoicing.
The American people have good reason to be Joyful on this anniver
sary. The whole world has as nvich. When. th.e. first Fourth dawned,
In 1776, the only republic on earth, worthy the name was Switzerland.
The only constitutional monarchy worthy the name was England, altho
Holland with a species of hereditary and aristocratic government pre
tended to be somewhat of a republic. The example of the United
States was inspiring, contagious and effective. All Europe began to fol
low suit. France got excited and turned herself Inside out in her effort
to' get rid of monarchy and aristocracy and imitate the trans-Atlantic
republic. The struggle has been going on In every government on earth
to approach the democratic Ideal which this republic has Illuminated.
Success is not always apparent In such efforts, but the whole world is
many times better by reason of the American Fourth and all it stands
for than if it had never dawned. Greatest day in the calendar, next to
Christmas, it should in truth be a sort of a mid-summer Christmas,
sacred to the highest ideals In government as Christmas is sacred to the
highest ideals In life. May the people, the boys and girls, the men and
women, come to realize soon that the best celebration and the greatest
pleasure are not in producing absurd explosions, but In some forms
of rejoicing which will be less barbarous than noise, less brutal than
dissipation and less heartrending than the catastrophes which malm
and mangle so many little children.
X LINCOLN'S GETTYSBURG ADDRESS.
Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon X
X this continent a new nation, conceived In liberty, and dedicated X
to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now, we are en-
gaged In a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any na-
tlon so conceived and so established can long endure.
We aro met on a great battlefield of that war. We are met to i
dedicate a portion of It as the final resting-place of those who
have given their lives that the nation might live. It is altogether
X fitting and proper that we should do this. i
li But In a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not conse- ii
H crate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and J
X dead, who struggled here have consecrated It far above our power
to add to or to detract. The world will very little note nor long
5-1 remember what we say here; but It can never forget what they did
here. i
X It Is for us living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished
$ work that they have thus far so nobly carried on. It Is rather X
H for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before X
X us; that from those honored dead we tako Increased devotion to J
J3 that cause for which they hero gave the last full measure of devo- X
M tlon; that wo hero highly resolve that these dead shall not have X
died in vain; that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of
$1 freedom, and that government of tho people, by the people, for 5
the people, shall not perish from tho earth.

X GOOD EVENING.
? The two things that men's X
ii lives want most as they grow M
H older are, I think, simplicity
$ and Independence. ii
ii PHILLIPS BROOKS.
When the earth's last picture is dust
ed and the floors are painted and
dried,
When the oldest carpet is beaten, and
the youngest spider has died
We shall rest and faith we shall
need it He down for a moment or
two
Till the dust on the grand pinao shall
set us to work anew.
We shall have real paint to lean on
pile everything Into the hall.
And scrub for an hour at a sitting,
and never be tired at all.
And they that are clean shall be
happy; they shall eat off a kitchen
chair,
And dab with an ample dustcloth at
tho back of the Chiffonier.
And the man of theihouse shall praise
us or (more than probably)
blame,
And no one shall work for money
and certainly not for fame,
But each for tho joy of cleaning, and
each In her feminine glee,
That the house may bo perfectly
spotless, as the neighbors think It
should be.
A Coos Bay Woman arrives at a
conclusion the same way she throws
a rolling pin at a cat er that is
some women.
It's a good thing that some Coos
Bay men do not have to eat their
own words. There is no use choking
a man to death.
Tho trouble with some Coos Bay
women Is that they always want
everything that you do not want
them to have. And "they want what
they want when they want it," too.
'Tls here again,

Let none complain
Of nature's law.

Doth gaily bring
With glories' new!
No blossoms rare
