MANY DIVERSIONS FOR THE FOURTH
Coos Bay People Will Celebrate
July Fourth Tomorrow In a
Great .Variety of Ways.
FOURTH OF JULY
ENTERTAINMENTS.

the afternoon.
Eagles celebration at Ten Mile,
boats leaving Marshfleld at G
o'clock In the morning.
Celebration nt Coqullle, North
Bend and Dandon ball teams
playing there at 10:30 In the
morning and Marshfleld and Co-
qullle In tho afternoon.
Hundreds will go to Charleston
and Sunset Bays, the beaches,
and up Coos River with various
picnic parties,
Coos Bay people, are planning to
celebrate tho .Fourth of July tomor
row in a variety of way as Is In
dicated above. Many of tho business
houses will bo closed all day but
some of them are planning to remain
open until noon.
In MnrBhfleld, tho event of tho day
will be tho races In tho aftprnoon,
tho entries for which arc given in
The Times elsewhere. A fine card Is
said to have been prepared and that
svery lover of the races will be more
than satisfied if the weather man will
be generous and permit them to do
their best.
Eagles Will IMcuIc.
The Eagles are planning for a gay
time at their picnic at Ton Mile to
morrow In which nearly all of tho
Eagles and their families in this sec
tion are planning to participate. Tho
3oys of the day will more than re
compense the excursionists for hav
ing to nrlso early In order to catch
tho boat which will leave tho dock
In the rear of Wolcott'B grocery at
5 a. m. tomorrow morning.
There will be picnic parties galore,
both branches of Coos river, the
north fork of tho Coqullle, Char
leston Bay, Sunset Bay and the
beaches being some -of the objective
points. Young and old will parti
cipate In these.
Tho edict of Marshal J. W. Cartor
today that tho dlschargo of fire
works and firo-crnckers In the city
will result In the arrest of the boys
or parties responsible, unless they
hnve a permit from the city officials,
Is likely to dampen the ardor of some
of the entliuslnslsts whoso Idea of
celebrating Is to make as much noise
as possible. Tho order wns necessary
to prevent possible fires, the danger
tomorrow being great on account of
so many being absent from their
stores.
Large Number of People Give
Up Lives For Celebrations
Guard Against Lockjaw.
All over the country, cities, towns
and families are today preparing for
, the Fourth of July celebration. The
work Is both offensive and defensive.
' It Is offensive In that It is dlsagree-
I able, noisy, bad smelling and danger-
ous. It Is defensive In that prudent
, mothers and prudent physicians and
undertakers are preparing poultices
and plasters, lint and surgical instru-
ments, hospitals and cofilns for the
slain, and tho wounded of that dlre-
j ful day. In tho matter of foolish and
' foolhardy celebration tho United
States on the Fourth of July takes
tho cake.
The Surgeon General of the Army
i has caused a circular suggesting pre
cautions against tetanus, or lock
jaw, the Inevitable Fourth of July
epidemic. In the last Ave years there
have been 78G cases of tetanus ns the
result of our Independence Day cele
bration. 721 have died. G08 of these
deaths resulted from blank cartridge
wounds the blank cartridges are
mistakenly supposed to be harmless.
The warning gives the following ex
planation of the origin and operation
of the tetanus bacillus.
The bacillus of tetanus or Its
spore form, is found In earth, es
pecially garden earth, stable man
ure, tho dust of the streets, stables
and human habitations. The feces
of healthy animals, such as the horse,
cow, dog, and even man, may contain
tetanus spores.
Lockjaw and Its Cure.
When tetanus spores are Intro
duced under the skin, they at once
germinate, if oxygen is excluded, and
begin to elaborate tetanus toxin. In
a short time It appears in the blood,
which carries it to all parts of the
body, where it is absorbed by the
motor nerve endings which are bath
ed in the toxin-laden fluid. The ner
ves supplying the jaws, especially the
masseteric, seem to have an exag
gerated affinity for the poison, which
explains the early trismus.
The following treatment for
Fourth of July injuries Is suggested:
"Incise freely every wound.
"Carefully and thoroughly remove
from the wound every particle of for
eign matter.
"Cauterize tho wound thoroughly
with 2G per cent carbolic ncld.
"Apply loosely a wet pack of 25
per cent carbolic acid.
"Give a full doso of antltctanic
serum.
