Independent and Pacific States
Companies to Appear Before
Council Tonight.
An animated discussion of the tele
phono situation on Coos Bay is ex
pected before the city council tonight
when It. T. Durett and his attorney,
"V. U. Douglas, will appear again and
ask notion on the franchise for the
new indenendent exchanEe. John W.
Gillcyson, division superintendent of I
the Pacific States company, arrived
hero yesterday to reinforce Manager
L. H. Robertson in his opposition to
the new company. Mr. Gilkyson has i
been conferring with a number of
local business men since his arrival
but refuses to make any statements
prior to the council meeting this
evening.
At the last session, the council
laid Mr. Durott's proposed franchlso
on the table another week to give
the Pacific States Telephone Com
pany nn opportunity to pledge some
kind of Improvement in their locnl
exchange. Messrs. Durett and Dou
glas were nonplussed at this action
as they had practically permitted tho
council and the city attorney to draft
the franchlso under which tho new
automatic telephone system was to
opornto.
It Is understood that a number of
citizens will reinforce Messrs. Du
rett and Douglas' requests for a
franchise at tonight's meeting.
In addition to the telephone mat
tor, a number of street improvement
projects will come up. The improve
ment of Prospect avenue will prob
ably be ordered along the lines
agreed to at the conference of Mayor
