COOS BAY COALING STATION.
The arrival of three torpedos boats
which are parts of the United States
Navy and the action of such boats
in "coaling up at this port may not
in itself seem to be an event of vast
importance. But it is, nevertheless,
the first time in the history of Coos
Bay that its native coals have been
used for naval purposes and the first
time that naval boats, except light
ships, have ever entered the port and
taken on such natlvo coals for steam
purposes. The meaning of this may
seem of little consequence even to the
officer in charge of the boats, but the
fact is that it marks the beginning
of an era the Importance of which
cannot be minimized. There is no
coal on the Pacific coast of North and
South America south of Puget Sound
except at Coos Bay nnd tho surround
ing country. The growth of the com
merce of the Pacific, the vast in
crease of her future shipping, the as
sembling of great population on these
western shores, will force tho main
tenance of a naval power in the great
ocean which washes these shores.
There must be a naval station and
coaling station and the most suitable
place for such station is where the
coal Is produced. On the Pacific, the
only port where coal can be furnish
ed from mines within three or four
miles of the wharf is Coos Bay. It
is probable that no other port In the
world can furnish coal to the ship
at the mine's mouth. Here, then
are the possibilities which are equall
ed nowhere on earth. Boundless
timber! Inexhaustible coal! A bay
capable of being converted into a
capacious deep sea harbor at one
half the cost of Long Beach's break
water, one fourth the cost of Boston's
thirty-five foot channel, one tenth the
cost of reducing the Columbia river
bar. In return Coos Bay can furnish
tho government a coal which will bo
equal to that which keeps the Ger
man navy afloat.
Tho coals which the torpedo boats
aro taking on are not up to the naval
standard, but tho tests lately made
by W. A. Thies, M, E., a German ex
pert who has solved the problem of
briquetting Coos Bay coals, and who
is high authority on tho subject, have
proven that Coos Bay coals can be
brought up to the naval standard by
briquetting. Tho Times is able to
say that parties are proposing to in
stall a plant for such briquetting
work nnd that tho prospects are very
satisfactory for such a plant within
the next six months. Tho company
proposes to obtain Its machinery
from Magdeborg, Prussia. Mr. Thies
having advised that as being readily
adaptablo to the work hero.
Mr. Thies states on tho highest
German and French authority that
the following reasons exist for tho
use of briquets rather than raw coal
on naval vessels; first, they mako no
smoke and tho streak of black smoko
loft by the use of bituminous coal,
by which tho enemy knows tho posi
tion of tho vessols, Is avoided; sec
ond, tho briquets aro more easily
flred and reduco boiler room forces;
third, they ovaporato moro water for
tho same grato area and thus allow
a greater power output from a given
furnaco nnd boiler; fourth, they re
quire less store room; fifth, thero is
no waste; sixth, tho fires fed by the
briquots may bo kept up for a long
porlod without cleaning; sovonth,
steam pressuro is moro uniform;
eighth, there Is no liability of spon
taneous combustion; ninth, Insur
ance rates are therefore diminished;
tenth, thero is less sweeping of tubes
required. Tho existence of at least
four hundred squaro miles of coal
land in tho Coos nnd Curry county
coal fields most of whoso product
is capahlo of being hriquotted with
out a binder or tho Introduction of
any Ingrodiont to bind tho culm Is
a far bettor insurance of futuro groat
Jmrbor improvements than anything
else. Tho coaling at this point of tho
torpedo boats will bo followed soonor
or lator by fleots and great ships of
war.
