ANCESTOR WORSHIPERS.
There is one man who has drawn
a little apart from the common
crowd which- prostrates itself before
the images of Its aristocratic, pow-der-and-puff,
star-and-garter ances
tors of putative klnsmanship. This
man has a forbear, too, of whom he
is proud and willing to boast, per
haps, at times; which is right. He
differs from the others, not in the
pardonable satisfaction he takes in
admiring his progenitor, but in the
ancestral qualities which he admires.
When one boasting asserts that his
great grand uncle dusted out the bed
chamber of the king of England, this
anomalous ancestor worshiper re
torts quietly: "My father used a
pick and a sluicing cradle before he
learned how to use a table fork; he
was a gold miner before he was any
thing else." This strange man is
Clarence H. Mackay of Nevada. A
few days ago he presented to the
University of Nevada a statue of his
father the Nevada Mackay who
started a great fortune by manual
labor.
Now, ninety-nine men In every
hundred would have had his parent's
likeness completed with a frock coat,
silk hat and distinguished looking
waistcoat. Mr. Mackay is the hun
dredth man. Frock coats and silk
hose were superficial features of his
father's life, and came only durlifg
later years. His first costume of ma
turity consisted of a pair of cowhide
boots, a red flannel shirt, a slouch
hat and corduroys.' ' llr. Mackay pre
fers to think of his father as the
sturdy, fearless, tenacious youth who
braved the hardships of the camps
and won a fortune by the labor of his
own hand. He entertained an affec
tion for the aristocratic capitalist;
but it is of the miner he is most
proud. Consequently, he has caused
the new statue of the elder Mackay
to be carved in an untrammeled at
titude. The figure is booted, the shirt
open at the front. Just a common
pick is clenched In one hand. This
is the real Mackay and any other
representation would have been a
falsehood.
Perhaps Mr. Mackay has a noble
man or so in his lineage somewhere!
but he has not mentioned the fact,
doubtless never having deemed It of
sufficient importance for words. To
him the true nobility is the nobility
of toll and strife and achievement.
That rugged statue on the university
campus means more to Mr. Mackay,
and It means more to the state of
Nevada, than could the busts of an
entire succession of hereditary kings
.of reputed relationship.
AMERICAN HARDWOODS.
The rapid consumption of Ameri
can hardwoods ts causing the tim
ber dealers of the United States to
turn their attention to the supplies
of adjoining countries. The mos
quito of Texas is beginning to find
favor, several carl6aaaT"havIng re
cently been shipped frSni thnt State
to Michigan, where the. wood is ma
nufactured Into furniture. Mexico
has a pretty fair supply of this class
of timber and our manufacturers
would liko to break In upon it, but
there Is a stiff export duty impos
ed by Mexico on unmanufactured
timber which stands In the way of
their desires, and Is not likely to bo
removed, for the Mexicans In impos
ing it were inspired by the double
purpose of conserving their timber
supply and of encouraging domestic
manufactures. No obstacles nro plnn
ned In tho way of Its use by manu
facturers In Moxlco, but mesqulto Is
not likely to go out of tho ropubllc
In its raw stato whllo tho Moxlcans
aro in thoir prosont frame of mind.
