WHY ARE PEOPLE POOR?
"Why are people poor?" was the
question discussed at a recent meet
ing of a woman's club In an eastern
city, and the answers were many
and far apart. Hero are a few of
them boiled down:
Drink.
Laziness.
Charge accounts.
Inability to plan far ahead.
The desire to outshine one's
neighbor.
Indifference of men to the needs
of home.
Women's Ignorance of domestic
economy.
High food prices and buying in
small quantities.
Lack of plain business under
standing between husband and wife.
Certainly this is a formidable list.
But it lacks ono element and more
important than all those named, and
that is:
The lack of real desire to rise
above a hand-to-mouth existence.
We all think we want to get rich
or at least to get into comfortable
circumstances. But we don't all
want to work hard enough. The de
sire is not a vital part of our na
ture. It does not mould our habits
of thought and feeling. It Is not
Instinctive with us. And so it does
' not lead us to overcome obstacles.
Wo turn aside for other things
that we desire more than wealth.
We aro not men of deeds, stabil
ity and firm resolution.
To be sure, the ambition for riches
Is by no means the highest or wor
thiest. There is but one class more
despicable than those who give
themselves over wholly to money
making, and that Is those who arc
Boddenly content with poverty.
Between the two extremes lies the
golden mean of sanity, content and
usefulness.
There are many In this and every
other town, young men and old men,
who have seen men "get ahead," and
aro today seeing some men make
money, and nmko it legltlately, too.
There are in every factory and shop
ono or more men, who, while draw
ing the same pay as the others, aro
saving money. The majority spend
their monoy and kick against luck.
The ono who is saving a part of his
wages always looks a llttio neater,
has no time to attend to other peo
ple's business, but pays his debts
and regularly lays a little by for a
rainy day. He is sure to get ahead.
He needs no rules no set laws to
guide him along the road to com
fort. The seed of success In monoy
making is within himself. All the
obstaclos In the above list cut no fig
ure with him. He does not walk
around them he sweeps thom to
one side ho is bigger than they
nre. In life, as In business, he does
what is necessary and cuts out thd
unnecessary.
Drink costs money and time nnd
strength; thoroforo, ho does not
drink'. Gambling costs sleep and
the vitality that ho needs for the
next day; thoreforo, ho does not
gamble. Ho sees that cash buys
more than credit. Ho novor learns
the seductions of luxuries that cost
moro than ho can nfford.
But at middle ngo the men who
formerly worked with him aro work
ing for him.
That's not luck that's good, hard
common sonso that's what It Is.

GOOD EVENING.
An aim in life is the only
fortune worth the finding; and
X It is not to be found In foreign
lands, but in the- heart Itself.
ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON. X
Bluebirds are a slngin',
Through the sunny hours;
Zephyrs are a bringln',
Sweet porfume of flowers.
Leaves are all a stlrrln',
Whlsperin to the breeze,
Birds are buildin castles
In the murmurln' trees.
Bees are all a kltln,
Honey to the comb,
Fish are all a bltin'
In the little creek at home.
Lilies aro a growln'
On its shady edge;
Water isa flowin'
Past a mossy ledge.
On its tiny billows, -
Streaks of silver white, ' t'f,
Past the pussy willows , f
Rlpplin' with delight.
The shady rapids lighten,
With the snow-white foam;
Fish are all a bltin'
In the little creek at home.
'Tls no time for sadness,
Lay aside your care;
The world is full of gladness,
AH the world is fair.
Hear the water fallin'
O'er the steppln stone,
Tls the wild a callin',
Callin to its own.
While I'm busy wrltin'
This foolish pome,
Fish are all a bltin'
In the little creek at home.
Exchange.
Footing the bills makes some Coos
Bay men tired even If doesn't tire
their feet.
What was the most Important bet
ever made? The alphabet, of
course.
When a man eats too much duck,
he should take a dose of quack
medicine.
A Coos Bay man says he believes
whisky saved his life. Some' men
can believe almost anything.
If Dummy Rowan should meet
and marry a girl like him they
would be unspeakably happy.
No, dear, the slang phrase "come
across" did not originate with Wash
ington crossing the Delaware.
Some Coos Bay girls are just con
trary enough not to marry a bald
headed man because they can't pull
his hair.
The Coos Bay young man asked
the young lady at the picnic which
she would have, a lemonade or a
ginger ale. She replied: "If you
don't mind, I believe I should prefer
a pop." She got it before sunset.
Givo a fellow a dipper of water
and he will drink out of the side
where you didn't. Give him a bottle
and ho don't caro where you havo
mouthed it. He sticks it in his
mouth and drinks like a drain pipe.
