ALUMNI BALL
Annual Function of Marshfield
High School Alumni Held
Last Evening.
The annual "Prom" of the Marsh
field High School Alumni at the I.
O. O. P. Hall, last evening, was one
of the most successful and most lar
gely attended ever given by the as
sociation and probably surpassed any
similar social function ever held on
Coos Bay. While the 200 or 250
present rather crowded the hall, the
largo number did not detract from
the pleasure of the evening.
The hall was beautifully decorated
for the occasion, huckleberries being
used extensively in the decoration
scheme. Other features of the decora
tions were festoons of Japanese lan
terns, hanging baskets of rhododen
drons and other flowers and a rustic
fence across the stage, screening the
musicians. Marshfield high school
penants were also hung throughout
the hall.
Fred. McCormac and Tom Patter
son presided at the punch bowl dur
ing the evening.
It was a dress affair, and most of
the ladies appeared in white. While
the majority of the guests were of
the younger set, a number of the
older ones were present. There were
eighteen numbers on the program
with four extras. Music was furnish
ed by the Coos Bay Orchestra.

Gives Out Booster Interview In
Portland On Business Condi
tions. PORTLAND, Juno 11. C. J.
Mlllls, vice-president and general
manager of tho Coos Bay, Roseburg
& Eastern Railroad & Navigation
Company, Is in Portland coming here
to meet his daughter, Mabel, who
has returned from Cornell Univer
sity, where she has taken a year In
inuBlc. Mr. Millis is well known In
Portland, where he was until a year
ago livestock agent for the O. R. &
N. Co. As manager of the Harriman
property in Coos county, he makes
his headquarters at Marshfield. He
Is also manager for the Portland &
Coos Bay steamship line and the
Beaver Hill Coal Company, all Harri
man properties.
Coos county has, apparently, not
heard of the financial depression, for
Mr. Mlllls says business In general on
his road has been better during the
past month than during the corres
ponding month of last year. The
steamer business, says Mr. Mlllls, is
hardly up to the traffic handled by
the other interest, one reason being
that the movement of traffic into the
Coos county is not quite as heavy
this seasons as it was last.
"Our coal mines are being devel
oped in great shape," said Mr. Millis.
"Large quantities of the coal are be
ing shipped to San Francisco by tho
steamer Czarina.
"The statement has been made
that we are making preparations to
take the steamer Breakwater off tho
Portland run, but this is not the case.
We shall leave tho boat on the Port
land route just as long as there is
traffic for her, and we certainly do
not contemplate withdrawing her.
The steamer has made 51 round trips
bejtween Portland and tho Coos Bay
ports during tho past fiscal year.
There was no delay whatever at
either bar. She Is the only steamer
on tho Oregon coast that crossed
either of the two bars on January
4 and 5 of this year, when there was
exceptionally heavy weather, other
vessels being bar-bound."
