Go to Portland. A number of
local Knights of Columbus are plan
ning to go to Portland, Juno 28, to
attend a big meeting of tho order
there. The Portland council will
confer the Third Degree on a number
of candidates.
Catch Smelt In Bay. Yesterday
and today, tho wharf near the Plant
and Alliance docks havo been lined
with fishermen, mostly boys. A
largo number of smelt are being
caught, some being six or eight
Inches long. They bite on almost any
kind of bait.
Pint Tract. Tho plat of tho La
Crosse farm on South Coos River, re
cently bought by a local syndicate
and headed by Russ Tower and now
known as LaCrosso Park, was ac
cepted at a meeting of tho stock
holders the other night. It Is plan
ned to sell tho entire tract this
summer In small tracts for summer
homes and truck and fruit gardening.
Will Raise Pay. Owing to tho In
creased business of tho Marshfleld
and North Bend postofllces, Post
masters Curtis and Russell will get
substantial Increases In salary after
July 1. The salary of Postmaster
Curtis of Marshfleld will be Increased
from $2,000 to $2,300 per annum
while Mr. Russell's salary will bo ad
vanced from $1,400 to $1,500 per
annum.
Repertoire Company Pleases.
Margaret lies and Company played
last night to tho largest audlenco
they havo had since they opened
their week's engagement in Marsh
fleld and made a greater hit than
ever. The bill was "Tho Rose of the
Ranch" and resembled Blanche
Bate's "The Girl of tho Golden
West." Miss Ilea and tho other
members of tho company wore enthu
siastically applauded frequently. Tho
company is declared to bo tho best
that has ever appeared on Coos Bay.
Protest Against Oil. Local fish
ermen aro discussing tho advisability
of instituting steps to prevent oil
burning vessels cleaning their tanks
In tho bay. They claim that If It Is
allowed to continue, tho oil rofuso
will kill all of the fish, clams and
crabs In tho bay. It is likely that
they will take It up through Doputy

SHERIFF W. W. GAGE of Coquille,
was in Marshfleld on official busi
ness yesterday. He is highly grati
fied over tho big vote given him
at tho election and was warmly
congratulated by his numerous
friends on tho Bay.
O. B. HINSDALE of Gardiner, was
In Marshfleld yesterday to attend
a regular monthly meeting of tho
directors of tho First National
bank of which he Is president. Ho
says that everything Is going about
as usual at Gardiner, the mill hav
ing all the business It can con
veniently handle.
JOHN PETERSON of Empire, was In
Mnrshfleld last evening on business
and calling on friends. Ho saya
everything is sereno at Empire,
but that most of tho people aro
giving up hopes of the Southern
Oregon Company reopening Its
mill during tho present year.

from today, Mr. Kreltzer Is not

Breakwater In Tonight. It was
erroneously stated In The Times yes
terday that the Breakwater was duo
last evening. The Breakwater has
not changed Its schedule and con
sequently will not reach Coos Bay
until tho rogular time, about 7
o'clock this evening. She will sail
again for Portland Saturday.

Frledberg and other West 'C stroot
property owners uro threatening to
start Injunction proceedings If tho
city attempts to carry out the Im
provement of 'C street and 'C avo
nuo along tho linos now proposed.
Thoy object to tho proposed grado
and also want a more durable pav'ng
than plank. They claim that tho
proposed grado is too high for tho
property south of 'C avenuo.
