FAITH IX COOS BAY.
A city is built by men who have
faith and not by those who are with
out faith. But faith consists in some
thing more than a mere indefinable,
vague belief, that sometime, some
how there will fall from heaven or
from the patronage of some great
financier, a city ready built, thus
making every man who holds a lot,
rich. Faith is a form of genius. He
who has faith that Coos Bay Is des
tined to become a great city will, if
his faith is worth anything and is
entitled to be called anything else
than humbug, be Inspired to work
for Coos Bay as well as to talk for
It. Every city In America which has
grovn great owes its greatness to Its
people who had faith. This was the
case with that Chicago which was not
founded on a rock but in a swamp.
It wa3 the case with Duluth which
was not built In a swamp but on the
side of a ledge. It was the case with
Kansas City, which took the crown
away from beautiful Leavenworth and
kept it. Seattle and Spokane were
both built and they now thrive be
cause their people have the kind of
faith which justifies Itself by works.
Marshfleld will get a railroad one
of these days. If her faith were
more aggressive If her people would
lmproye, cheap to those who agree
sell the lots they do not care to
improve cheap to those who agree
to Improve, the growth of the city
would be Insured and the railroad
would come flying. It has been sta
ted that the railroad company pro
poses to delay building until Marsh
field consents, In sheer desperation
to allow tie Bay to be bridged. The
report may or may not bo true. But
eight thousand people, supposed to be
nbout the population of Marshfleld
and North Bend with all the resour
ces they have at their doors, must be
sadly lacking In something if they
can't get connected by rail with the
outside world. Every man who has
four twenty-five foot lots can afford
to give two of them In order to get
a railroad. Ills remaining two lots
would bo worth twice as much as ho
now holds thorn for, the moment the
road Is assured. They would bo worth
four times ns much when the train
arrives. Othorwlso, he may have to
wait and bo tnxed out of his un
profitable holdings.
Marshfleld may be sure that the
Northwestern Railroad will be ex
tended from Lander, Wyoming, to
the coast. The coast does not neces
sarily mean Coos Bay. Even, If the
company decided to go to n point
north of Eureka and south of Asto
ria, it would not necessarily mean
Coos Bay. It may be a misfortune
that Coos Bay has such a fine loca
tion. That was tho trouble with
Leavenworth and Superior and they
lost out to tho poorly located cities
of Duluth and Kansas City. Bandon
has not as good n location as Coos
Bay, but perhaps Coos Bay people
would bo a little more generous in
trying to get metropolitan honors If
she did. Thnt very fact may make
Bandon a city to be feared as a rival,
for it is pretty woll known
that harbors can bo built
almost nnywhoro that tldo water
can bo obtained. Even Rome,
tho city of tho Tiber In Italy, Is to
have n harbor to be constructed at
tho slight cost of a few million. Port
Orford down tho coast from Marsh
fleld in Coos county, could becomo a
groat seaport without any dredging
If n breakwater, costing about $10,
000,000 woro constructed. Long
Bench in California, has a pretty good
harbor mado so by constructing a
broakwuter costing four nnd a half
million.
Tho point Is that Marshfleld will
not got a railroad very rapidly unless
Bho gots moro people. Sho will not
get moro pcoplo until Bhe gives bet-

WANDERER'S SONG.
I HAVE had enough of women and
enough of love.
But the land waits, and the sea waits.
and day and night Is enough.
Give me a Ions white road, and the gray
wide path of tho sea.
And the wind's will and the bird's will
and the heartache still in me.
WHY should I seek out sorrow and give
gold for strife?
I have loved much and wept much, but
tears and love are not life
The grass calls to my heart, and the foam
to my blood cries up,
And the sun shines, and the road shines,
and the wine's In the cup.
I HAVE had enough of wisdom and
enough of mirth.
For the 'nay's one and tho end's one, and
It's soon to tho ends of the earth.
And It's then good night and to bed, and
if heels or heartache.
Well, It's sound sleep and long sleep, and
sleep too deep to wako.
Arthur Symons.
