A LETTER TO THE
COQUILLE VOTERS.
It Is gratifying to mc to know the
Coquille Valley people appreciated
the man who sees so clearly the
great future of this county.
You may publish this statement
both far and wide: Bandon and the
Coquille Valley to Myrtle Point, is
the backbone of Coos county, and
Coos Bay is the heart and lungs.
Myrtle Point some day will have one
building, which will cost more for
Its construction than the whole
townslte has cost to date. The pala
tial homes of the Coos Bay and Ban
don merchants and manufacturers
will loom up on the hills, surround
ing the present townslte. Coquille
Trill have a sanatorium, which, in
Importance and as a developing in
fluence, will out-welgh all of their
other resources. Invalids and health
seekers cannot live on the sea shore,
"but with their home hotel at Co
quille, and the resort on the Bandon
beach, their chances for recovery,
and return to robust health, is great
er than at any other point in the
United States or Canada.
As for Bandon, I have this to say:
A seaport city of 25,000 will be on
our map in a very few years. There
is no Bandon man today who has
so clear a conception of his city's
future as I have. I regard Bandon
as the best point on the Pacific coast
today for men of youth, energy and
a few thousand dollars, to commence
at once in, much safer and better
than Coos Bay.
As all things to be great in size
and power, spread out fast, thus
debilitating their strength, for con
centrated action, Coos Bay city site
Is vast, and she has a number of
controlling points, two of which can
bold their grip a short time, but just
Jong enough to confuse capital, and
to be fatal to a small operator; in
short, the changing of centers in
Coos Bay will crush hundreds of
men and blast the hopes of thou
sands of the small investors; but for
the man of great foresight and heavy
money power, Coos Bay's real estate
is a hundred to one better than Ban
don. Many of our Coos Bay men would
do better to sell out at once and go
to Bandon. As one proof is worth
1,000 arguments, I will give you
the proof of my assertion. Now, you
must think carefully of what I say;
do not Idiotically yell hot nir. My
harshest criticism of the people of
this country Is their disposition to
denounce any good expression which
they do not understand as hot air.
I will call the turn on future devel
opment (which is against my own
interest financially) ; Coos Bay is
destined to have a large seaport city,
a commercial metropolis; Bandon Is
bo compact that no man need to
change his first location; they can
tell Just as well today where they
are at as when the city is fully devel
oped. Bandon will have the great
est seaside resort on the coast, on ac
count of Its central location and its
even climate. Its bar and entrance
can be made with small outlay to
pass any of the coastwise shipping;
Coos Bay people can help themselves
more by helping Bandon to Myrtle
Point; as the average new comer will
do better for himself and the country
to locate there. Unlike Portland,
our Coos Bay people mtibt help build
up the surrounding country before
they begin establishing tho mercan
tile institutions in keeping with her
great seaport.
It will be to your Interest as well
as mine that 1 get a good voto in
your part of tho country. My only
pledge to you Is that my conduct will
always bo consistent with tho atti
tude expressed In this letter. Thank
ing you in ndvance for your earnest
support, which will make me your
next representative,
I am sincerely yours,
L. D. KINNEY.

A LETTER TO THE
LABORING .MAN,
Fellow Citizens:
Since the Republicans of Coos
county so kindly nominated me, thus
placing my name before the people
as the Republican candidate for rep
resentative, I owe to them at least
an effort to clear away any false im
pression which my opponents may
give out.
As I have always believed the peo
ple should carefully and deliberately
select their man, and ttahnom H H
select their man, and that no man
should ever clammor for an office, I
did not intend to say one word in
ray own behalf, that I might know
the people of Coos county had In
me just the man they wanted; I
would then earnestly show them that
they had made good use of their
vote.
A strong effort Is being made to
Impress the laboring man that I am
his enemy. There is nothing more
false against me than this statement.
Not only false, but it Is a shame to
so abuse me. I can prove that I
would have been a millionaire many
times over had I turned down labor
In favor of capital.
The hardships of my life have
come from my generosity toward my
employees.
Some on Coos Bay know the truth
of this statement.
They say I am against the labor
Hen law. Not true. I am for the
strongest and best protection of
American labor. I am known all
over the United States as an em
ployer of labor. Many bright men
have said of me: "To employ men
is the only use Kinney knows for
money." I have antagonized strong
companies, employers of labor, by
giving short days and big pay. I
have done more than any other one
man to better tho condition of the
laboring man here.
I need not say much more, as I
know the labor vote is not looking
for anything but a square deal. They
know the man who has the ability
to help their country in spite of all
said and done against him.
As ninety-five per cent of the
world's artificial wealth is labor, the
man who works against it is a degen
erate. Since my name Is before you, I be
lieve you will show to me your ap
preciation of the good work I have
done for Coos county, thus strength
ening my hand to do better and more
effective work in the future.
Yours most earnestly,
L. D. KINNEY.
