Victim Is Principal Witness
for State in Cases Being
Tried.
(By Associated Press.)
OAKLAND, Cal., May 27. Au
thorities are at work diligently try
ing to discover the identity of the
person or persons who, last night
wrecked the three new houses owned
by James L. Gallagher, a former
supervisor in San Francisco and the
principal witness for the graft prose
cution. Following the partial des
truction in a similar manner of his
residence here on the evening of
April 23, he concluded his testimony
in the Rueff case then on trial in San
Francisco. Ono theory is that some
one Implicated In the exposures
of the graft is responsible, and an
other is that a personal enemy of
Gallagher may be the dynamiter.
While Rueff was not convicted on
the last trial, the Jury disagreeing,
he will shortly bo tried on a similar
Indictment and again Gallagher will
be the principal witness.
Detective William J. Burns for the
prosecution in the trolley graft cases
will work on the latest dynamite
plot. He believes that some one in
the pay of the defense committed
the outrage for the purpose of In
timidating Gallagher from further
testifying in the case.

DRAWjKE
Plans Approved by Commis
sioners and are Sent to War
Department.
The Coos county commissioners
havo approved of a plan submitted
by L. J. Simpson and others for the
proposed drawbridge across South
Inlet. The plans have been sent to
the War Department to Becure a
permit for the construction of the
bridge which will probably be grant
ed soon. As soon as this Is done,
tho county commissioners will take
the matter up with a view of order
ing the work to be done.
The plans call for a bridge 1,400
feet long, including approaches. The
draw will be 105 feet long. This
will make a maximum width of forty
three feet. In addition to the draw,
there will be a span sixty feet long
and simllnr to the one on Coal Bank
Inlet to permit rafts to go through.
The bridge will be ten feet above
ordinary high water so that good
sized launches can ply under it with
out having to move the draw. Tho
roadway on the bridge will be eight
een feet wide. Concrete piers will
be used.
For Electric Line.
L. J. Simpson requested that the
bridge be built sufficiently strong to
permit tho operating of electric cars
over it as ho wishes to soon build
an electric line to his summer home
at Sunset Bay. Tho cost of the
bridge, according to present plans,
will be about $15,000, but Mr. Simp
son has promised to contribute liber
ally towards It If built according to
his wishes.
Judge Hall said that the matter of
extending the plank roadway from
Marshfleld to North Bend would be
taken up at tho July session of the
Commissioners. Seymour H. Bell who
isplannlngtobulld an electric lino on
Coos Bay has made indirect over
tures to the commissioners to secure
tho right to use the drive for his car
line. Ho has offered $1,000 towards
the cost of building the road. It is
not likely that tho commissioners
will grant him the right to use tho.
thoroughfare for such a small sum
as the cost of building a road other
than on tho trestlo would be much
greater than this amount.
