A Humorous View of Happiness
By J. ADAM liEDE, Contfrrjsmin From Minnesota.
Kv APPINESS means tho uplifting of civilization. Each year
1 Jj wo meet now obstacles, and when they have been overcomo
JL y wo havo obtained a new lead to happiness. Our comfort
and happiness lio in tho mastery of obstacles. And I might
say that it is not tho wealthy class that enjoys the most happiness. It
is THE GREAT MIDDLE CLASS of this great country.
Tho women of tho country today enjoy more happiness than did
those of a century ago. This is the result of THE
MASTERY OF OBSTACLES. Tho women have
more timo to join tho Daughters of tho American
Revolution or to start a revolution of their own.
The men also enjoy inoro privileges, and privileges
constitute happiness.
It has not been so long ago when a law was
passed prohibiting tho sale of whisky in tho capitol
at Washington and on tho Indian reservations. Tho
lawmakers evidently assumed that drunken Indians
and congressmen were dangerous. Perhaps they were right. But it
only shows the march of progress, which emphasizes happiness.
PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT IS SUCH AN ADVOCATE OF PRO
GRESSIVENESS THAT HE HAS EVEN CHANGED THE NATIONAL
BIRD FROM THE EAGLE TO THE STORK. EVIDENTLY HE ACTS
UPON THE THEORY THAT THE EAGLE MERELY SCREAMS, WHILE
THE STORK DELIVERS THE GOODS.

Two Old Time Journalists Meet
After a Separation of Over a
Quarter of a Century.
The old saying that this world is
not such a big one after all was ex
emplified on tho streets of Marsh
field yesterday. Two veteran Jour
nalists, former laborers on the
editorial staff of the Kansas City
Times, met, nfter a separation of
thirty long years. One of them Joo
Caven with a record of half-a-century
In the harness, the other W. Scott
Ford formerly of Portland, but now
an old pioneer of Coos Bay of sixty
days, who can lay claim to forty
years service as a pencil pusher.
Both of these men have climbed
tho divide and are now going down
tho other side. Joo Caven for many
years was a familiar flguro upon tho
streets of Kansas City. Part owner
of the Times, and advertising man
ager, he yet found time to wrlto
some caustic editorials. Genial,
clever, accommodating, everybody
was his friend. Now with his erst
while auburn locks, draped in snowy
whiteness he still retains the friend
ship of all thoso with whom ho has
become acquainted, and possesses
much of the old timo vigor, that for
merly characterized him. Disposing
of his interest in tho Times property
for a sum that any newspaper man
would deem a fortune, ho embarked
in other business, and speedily lost
every dollar of it. However Joo still
pegs along at the age of 73 calm
and serene, as the press agent of a
theatrical troupe, not forgetting to
contribute many good stories to tho
newspapers and magazines. Can't
forget the old habits of a lifetime.
A gallant soldier of tho Confederate
Army and a filibuster with Joo Shel
by to aid Maximillian in Mexico. He
is ever the same genial gentleman
that always commanded the respect
and admiration of all thoso who
know him.
A retrospection between these two
old veterans of Journalism showed
that out of all tho editorial and busi
ness staff of tho Times, thirty years
ago, only three are living. Ford,
Caven, and Charly Hasbrook, form
er business manager, havo survived
all their comrades. Morris on Mum
ford, the editor, tho man who
brought the paper up to a high stand
ard has Joined tho majority. "Geno"
Field, that erratic, but brilliant
genius is no more. Carl Sam Will
iams, a gallant soldier and ablo
writer, has laid down the sword and
pen forever. Walt C. Bacon, the city
editor, has passed over tho divide.
M. M. Morrisson, for years the book
keeper Is dead. A. H. Greely, tho
circulator Is dead to tho world in
a mad house In New York. "Tom"
McNabb, tho bluff but big hearted
foreman, has long been laid to rest.
Will Baker, a brilliant boy of the
staff fell over dead with heart dis
ease, and so tho list might go on
down the line of brilliant men
gathered to their last home. Tho
sad retrospection brought sorrow to
tho hearts of these two old veterans
when they had talked for hours ovor
tho over present past, and realized
that out of that largo editorial staff
thirty years ago, only three sur-J
vivo.
