President Wehrung Asks Coun
ty Commissioners to Help
at Exposition.
W. H. Wehrung of Hillsboro, presi
dent of the Oregon Alaska-Yukon
Exposition committee, is making an
active campaign to see that this
state Is properly represented at the
great exposition, many with a view
to investing or securing homes in the
Northwest, Mr. Wehring believes
that attractions are properly put be
fore the people there. He has sent
the following self-explanatory letter
to the county commissioners and
judges throughout Oregon:
"The Oregon Commission to the
Alaska-Yukon-Paclfic Exposition is
glad to inform you that the Oregon
building, now under construction at
Seattle, will be completed in duo
time for the coming exposition, and
will be the largest and most complete
state building on the grounds.
"We propose to make a collective
exhibit of the state's resources In
this building, and it is of the utmost
importance that we have a thorough
and attractive exhibit from every
county.
"You can readily see that we must
have your hearty cooperation In this
matter, and that the gathering of an
exhibit must commence at once. W6
will have to use the crops raised this
year, as the exposition opens the first
of June, 1909, too early for next
year's crop. Your grasses will soon
bo ready for harvest and It is impor
tant that you gather them at the
proper time. If they are over-ripe
they will not do for exhibition pur
poses; hence you see the necessity
of acting promptly. Wo will visit
' your county some time in Juno or
July and will be glad to assist you
in the work, though it will be neces
sary for you to begin collecting your
exhibit before we see you.
"The expense to your county in
ellecting such an exhibit will not
bo large. Get a live man to take
hold of the work and push it, bear
ing in mind that it is quality, not
quantity, that Is wanted. After you
have gathered your exhibit we will
transport it to Seattle, install and
maintain it without further expense
to your county; we will also place an
attendant In charge and will keep
in close touch with you during the
, Fair, so that your county will get
all the benefit possible In the way of
advertising, etc.
"Tho commission is also having
printed a 90-page booklet on tho re
sources of Oregon which will bo dis
tributed during tho exposition. Two
pages of this booklet will bo devoted
io each county. Wo also intend to
show by moving pictures .tho farms,
orchards, live-stock, timber, moun
tains, streams, and everything of in
terest In each county.
"We must have your help and co
operation In the gathering of your
exhibit. If we were compelled to
buy these exhibits tho state would
havo to iluublo its present oppropria
tion. but with your assistance wo
nope to carry out our present plans
without asking for any further ap
propriation. "Trusting to receive an early re
ply saying you aro with us in tho
work, and thanking you in ndvanco
for giving this your prompt atten
tion, wo are,
Yours very truly,
W. II. WEIIUUXG,
President.

Good IMorals Requisite
To Good Business.
By OSCAR S. STRAUS. Secretary of Commerce ntid Lnbor.
z
IIE first requisite of good permanent business conditions is
GOOD .MORALS not one kind of morals for tho farmer
who drives his cart of produce to market and another kind
of morals for tho railroad which brings tho products of the
farms and factories from distant point.
EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY AND RIGHTS IS AS NECESSARY
ON THE ONE HIGHWAY AS ON THE OTHER. NO UNREASON
ABLE CONDITIONS OR RESTRAINTS MUST BE PLACED UPON
EITHER.
There aro combinations which promoto trade and combinations
which restrain trade. To check both is harmful; TO PERMIT
BOTH IS MORE HARMFUL,
To adjust our laws to preservo corporate industrial and individual
right, and BY ALL MEANS INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS, and to
curb wrongs, whether corporate or individual, is of the highest con
cern not only to commerce, but to tho stability of the commonwealth.
High Time to Padlock
All Muck Rakers.
By JOSEPH B. FOUAKER, United State! Senator From Ohio.
13? would bo most fortunato if a padlock could bo provided for
the muck rakers all of them, high and low, big and little,
well intentioned and evil intentioned for it is HIGH TIME
TO QUIT SLANDERING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
They never less deserved it. They wore never more worthy of praise
and commendation.
THERE WERE NEVER HIGHER IDEAL8 AND MORAL STAND
ARDS AMONG THE BUSINESS MEN OF THE NATION, AND THERE
WERE NEVER BETTER METHOD8 EMPLOYED BY THEM FOR THE
CONTROL AND TRANSACTION OF BUSINESS.
j
In this wo should not only find hope and inspiration, but also a
command to administer our public affairs on the theory NOT THAT
'ALL MEN ARE DISHONEST, but that, with tho exception of
tho few, all men aro upright, and that as to even the few who may not
bo upright they are entitled to tho presumption that they aro and to
havo a right to be HEARD BEFORE THEY ARE CONDEMNED.

"WASHINGTON, May 23. L. W.
Hawley, expert on wood distillation
for the Forest Service, has just left
Washington for Oregon, Washington,
Montana and Idaho, to Investigate
tho possibilities of a future turpen
tine industry in tho northwestern
portion of tho United States.
Mr. Ilawley has taken with him a
small distillation apparatus, which
he will set up at various places in
these states, distilling the different
woods to determine their value in the
production of turpentine. In this
manner an accurate idea of tho
yield of extracts from tho various
woods can bo obtained, and samples
