Marshfield Oregon
BLUE seems to be the coming
fashion In laws as well as women's
hats and gowns.
Have a home of your own Is a good
motto and the present is a good time
to get it.
The watched pot that contains the
paving material for Marshfield
streets Is slow to boll.
The Coos Bay Push Club seems
to have gone to sleep. What Is need
ed is a stuffed club to make the Push
Club push.
The end of the world Is being pro
phesied again, but the modern mind
has In It a tinge of Emerson, who
said, on hearing such a report:
"Very well, we shall get along all
right without it."
While you are finding fault with
others, be sure the reform should
not begin at home. If each person
was himself perfect there would be
no need of reform and cries of reform.
"Never kick at any news published
that is given without prejudice," Is
a bit of good advice given by the
sago editor of the Albany Democrat.
A poor man can not deviate from
regular hours of toil, regular hours
of rest, and a r gular life in general.
Only the idle rich can afford to be
eccentric and dissatisfied.
The discussion on the amount it
costs to keep a hen one year brought
out the declaration from a southern
editor that it depends entirely on
whether the hen plays bridge. Isn't
that Editor the mean thing?
Medford has just voted to bond
Itself in the sum of $300,000 for a
municipal water system and the
city will go to work, without delay,
and build. Medford is another west
ern Oregon city that is forging rapid
ly to tho front This is something
Marshfiehl must be thinking about
soon.
NOW IS THE TIME.
The Times agrees with nnd desires
to ondorso the advice of one of its
advertisers that now is the timo to
build. It is an auspicious timo for
anyono contemplating building to go
ahead with tho.'r enterprises. Lum
ber men generally state that tho in
dications aro that prices will ad
vance ns soon as tho rate question
Is settled, as It probably will bo even
tually, perhaps within a month or
two. There Is nl least a good sign
that now Is probably tho cheapest
timo that will prevail for building,
something which makes its own sug
gestion. This Is not given In tho In
terest of tho iunibor business, but
in tho Interest of boosting Coos Bay.
HEBE'S TO THE LADIES.
Tho onterprlslng women of Coos
Bay aro to play an acflvo part in civic
improvement. Tho A. N. W. Club
or Mnrshfleld nnd the Beautiful
Amorlca Club of North Bond havo al
ready proven their worth as active
agents in tho promotion of progress
along these Hues.
No city can reach tho highest state
of bonuty and symmetry without the
delicate and artistic touch of worn
nn's hand, or at least the work being
done under her direction. Then
here's to the ladles who aro to be of
such valuable usslbtance In boautl
fjiiig the city.
LOCAL OPTION
HELPSMIENE
Prominent Lane County Busi
ness Men Say it Has Been
a Great Benefit.
The following Is a self-explanatory
letter which should be read carefully
by every voter in Coos county before
he votes on the local option question
at the general election next Monday:
EUGENE, Ore., Apr. 23, 190S.
Gentlemen:
Believing that Local Option as ap
plied to Lane County, Oregon, has
passed the experimental stage, hav
ing been tried for nearly two years,
you should now be ready to state
from personal experience, whether or
not the prosperity of the City of Eu
gene Is dependent upon the presence
of the saloon.
As business men we respectfully
request that you reply to the follow
ing questions, with permission to use
your name for publication, if It is
so desired:
First. "In your opinion, has your
business suffered any since Local Op
tion went Into effect two years ago?"
Second. "Do you not think that
the absence of the saloon Is desir
able, on account of the University
being located here?"
Third. "Do you not think that
the absence of the saloon Is desirable
for the protection of our boys and
girls?"
Fourth. "Do you favor the pres
ent conditions, i.e., a 'dry town'?"
Fifth. "Do you favor the return
of the saloon to our city?"
Note. These signatures were all In
favor of Local Option, and not one
business man would sign In favor of
the saloon.
Note. With two or three excep
tions, these signatures were secured
for each question, the exceptions be
ing principally due to the fact that
some had not been here two years
and could not sign for conditions
prior to the time the law became ef
fective. J. W. Quackenbush, hardware and
