Tho Eastslde city council will meet
next Tuesday evening. It is expected
that the franchise L. R. Robertson is

Breakwater In Tonight. Word
was received by Sergeant C. F. Mc
ColIum of the Breakwater, today
that the steamship would arrive at
Coos Bay from Portland at 7 o'clock
this evening.
Arrange Meeting Nights. Fire
Chief Tom NIcols and Mayor E. E.
Straw' have held a conference and
agreed to arrange the meeting nights
of the Acme Band, firemen and city
council so that tho bodies will not
gather simultaneously.
Eureka Passes By. The Eureka
did not stop at Coos Bay on this tvip
from Portland to Eureka, her pas
senger and freight accommodations
being filled. She is now at Eureka,
having passed here the day before
yesterday.
M. F. Plant May Bo Late. Accord
ing to advices from San Francisco,
tho steamship M. F. Plant may not
sail from there until Friday, Instead
of on Thursday as regularly schedul
ed. In this case, she will not reach
Coos Bay until late Sunday and prob
ably won't sail from hero on the
eturn trip until Monday.
Makes Fast Time Agent Harry
Skinner of tho Alliance, has been ad
vised that the vessel established a
now record on her last trip from Coos
Bay to Astoria. She left Marshfield
at midnight and reached Astoria
dock at 7 o'clock tho next evening,
or just nineteen hours. Tho Alliance
has hitherto made the distance from
bar to bar In sixteen hours but has
seldom been able to get out and In
tho harbors in three hours.

STEVENS ON SOCIALISM.
Umatilla Man Delivers Address at
Skating Rink in Behalf of
Doctrine.
A good sized audience heard J. D.
Stevens of Umatilla county deliver
an address on socialism at tho Skat
ing Rink last evening. Considering
tho number of other entertainments
going on in tho city, tho attendance
was very satisfactory. Mr. Stevens
is an entertaining speaker and for
nearly two hours set forth tho ad
vantages of socialism, answered tho
criticisms of it that havo been mado
by opponents and urged tho Coos
county Socialists to work harder
than over for victory. Ho believes
that the tendency of tho day is to
wards socialism and that it will bo
a comparatively short time until tho
cause triumphs. Mr. Keith presided
as chairman last ovonlng. Consider
able lltoraturo in behalf of tho So
cialist candidates for office In Coos
county was distributed.

Seattle, is on Coos Bay looking
over conditions with a view to

T. J. THRIFT, the present county
assessor and Democratic candidate
for reelection, Is on Coos Bay for
a few days In the Interest of his
candidacy and greeting his many
friends.
SUPT. W. H. BUNCH and Stato
Superintendent J. II. Ackerman
went to North Bend today. Mr.
Ackerman will deliver tho com
mencement address this evening
and leave tomorrow morning for
Gardiner.
JUDGE C. A. SEIILBREDE and F.
K. Gettins have returned from
Portland whore they attended tho
Oregon Republican convention.
Judge Sehlbredo was honored by
being elected one of the four del
elegates at large to the National
Republican Convention in Chicago.
The delegation was instructed for
Taft.
NORTH BEND NEWS
Mr. and Mrs. Wlnsor spent yester
day at Sunset Bay.
Stato Superintendent J. H. Acker
man will deliver the commencement
address In the North Bend High
School graduating exercises at Eck
hoff hall tonight. A large attendance
is expected.
The members of the North Bend
High School Athletic Association will
present the play, "The Village Skewl
of Long Ago," at Eckhoff hall tomor
row night. The proceeds will go to
the benefit of tho organization. In
addition to the farce, numerous spe
cial numbers will be introduced.
The Presbyterian Ladies Aid So
ciety of North Bend, met yesterday
afternoon with Mrs. McCaughan. The
usual enjoyable and beneficial ses
sion was had. Mrs. Richard Coke
was elected secretary in place of Mrs.
Long who recently resigned. Tea
was served on the conclusion of tho
afternoon's meeting.

came to Allegany the last of tho
week to go to the Pierce camp.

Mr. Thurman of Ash, was in North
Bend a few days ago on business.
Miss Grayco Gould in company
with Doctor and Mrs. Thayer are vis
iting at Riverside.
Mr. Nelson has been superlntend
endlng construction work on Alle
gany boulevard.
Mrs. McKnlght of Eastslde, and
daughter are spending a few days
in Allegany woods and mountains.
Mrs. Lawrenco and Miss Sagon
havo been visiting, Mrs. Lawrence's
parents who are camping in Prico
grove.
Mr. nnd Mrs. Claude Piper of
North Bend, are spending a few
weeks visiting with Mrs. Piper's
aunt, Mrs. -Thomas.
Mrs. Edwards left Monday for a
two weeks visit with hor sister, Mrs.
W. H. Bunch, Herman Edwards, re
turned a few days ago from Port
land whoro ho has been on business.
