ANOTHER REASON
Why mother has so many failures in bread-making Is that tho
experience of bakers has proven that it requires tho blending of
several brands of flour to secure satisfactory results because no one
brand contains all the elements of tho wheat. Then it also re
quires careful attention to have oven temperature which is almost
Impossible to secure in private homes. Our bread Is always tho
same. Uniformly good.

A number of women founded a club
for the purpose of dabbling in litera
ture and artistic pursuits. The two
having the most lelsuro were delegat
ed by the other members to look for
clubrootus. A week later they report
ed that they had made a selection.
"Where are tho rooms?" asked the
rest of the women.
"On tho third floor of this building,"
said the house hunters, and they
j spread out on the tabic a number of
i exterior and interior views of tho
building they had chosen. But their
club associates refused even to look
at the pictures.
"If the rooms are on tho third floor
it isn't worth while to consider them
even for a minute," they said. "It Is
an unwritten law that all clubrooms
dedicated to aesthetic and artistic pur
suits must have an ucrlal location.
Nothing below the eighth floor can
be thought of. It is all right for po
litical clubs and other organizations
devoted to material Interests to house
I themselves In first, second and third
floors, but the higher the nlms of any
society the higher the altitude de-
i mantled for Its clubrooms."
j The house hunters looked sorely puz-
1 zlcd.
j "Why?" they nsked.
' But not even the most enlightened
woman present could tell why.
"Wo only know that It fss so." they
said. "Look up the location of all
really soulful societies, and you'll And
, that the law Is faithfully observed."

I am awnre that there is a pre
judice against any man who manu
factures alcohol. I believe that from
the time It issues from tho colled
and poisonous worm in the distillery
until It empties into tho jaws of
death, dishonor and crime It demor
alizes everybody that touches it from
its source to whore it ends. I do not
believe anybody can contemplate tho
object without being prejudiced
against tiie uquor crime. All wo
have to do, gentlemen, is to think
of the wrecks on either bank of the
stream of death, of tho suicides, of
tho insanity, of tho ignorance, of the
destitution, of the little children tug
ging at the faded and withered
breast of weeping and despairing
mothers, of wives asking for bread,
of the men of genius It has wrecked,
tho men struggling with imaginary
serpents, produced by tho devilish
thing; ;and when you think of the
jails', of the almshouses, of the asy
lums, of the prisons, of tho scaffolds
upon either bank, I do not wonder
that every thoughtful man is pre
judiced against this damned stuff
called "alcohol."
Intemperance cuts down youth
in its vigor, manhood in its strength,
old ago in its weakness. It breaks
the father's heart, bereaves the dot
ing mother, extinguishes natural af
fection, erases conjugal love, blots
out filial attachment, blights paren
tal hopes, brings down mourning
age in sorrow to tho grave. It prod
uces weakness, not strength; sick
ness, not health; death, not life. It
makes wives widows, children or
phans, fathers fiends; and all of
them paupers and beggars. It feeds
rheumatism, invites cholera, imports
pcstllenco and embraces consump
tion. It covers the land with Idle
ness, misery and crime. It fills your
jails, supplies your almshouses and
demands your asylums. It engen
ders controversies, fosters quarrels
and cherishes riots. It crowds your
penitentiaries and furnishes victims
for your scaffolds. It is tho llfeblood
of the gambler, tho element of tho
burglar, the prop of tho highwayman
and support of the midnight, incen
diary. It countenances the liar, re
spects tho thief, esteems tho blas
phemer. It violates obligation,
reverences fraud and honors infamy.
It defames benevolence, hates love,
scorns virtue and slanders Innocence.
It incites the father to butcher his
helpless offspring, helps the husband
to massacre his wife and the child
to grind the paricidal ax. It burns
up men, consumes women, detests
life, curses God, despises heaven. It
suborns witnesses, nurses perjury,
defiles the jury box and stains the
judicial ermine. It degrades tho
citizen, debases the legislator, dis
honors tho statesman and disarms
the patriot. It brings shame, not
honor; misery, not safety; despair,
not hope; sorrow, not happiness, and
with tho malevolence of a fiend it
calmly surveys its frightful desola
tion and unsatlated havoc. It poi
sons felicity, kills peace, ruins mo
rals, blights confidence, slays reputa
tion, and wipes out national honor,
then curses the world and laughs at
Its ruin. It does all that and more.
It murders the soul. It is tho sum
of all villainies, tho father of all
crimes, the mother of all abomina
tions, the devil's best friend and
God's worst enemy.

Shall Saloons Run
Politics or
Be Run Out of
Politics ?
lly JOSEPH W. FOLK. Governor of Missouri.
;&. FEW years ago tho saloons seemed to consider them-
$ selves ABOVE TnE LAW. They defied tho au
thorities of city and state. Was the idea of enforcing
tho law graciously received by tho liquor interests?
Did they welcome a reign of law? Not at all. On
the contrary, they ATTEMPTED TO DEFY THE
ORDERS TO ENFORCE TILE LAW until they saw defianco was
useless. Then they gave unwilling acquiescence, while VOWING
VENGEANCE ON TnE OFFICIALS who dared consider that
laws were made for them to obey the same as ordinary mortals.
BY THEIR OWN CONDUCT THEY HAVE CREATED A SENTI
MENT AGAINST THEM THAT IS NOW ASSUMING CYCLONIC PRO
PORTIONS. LED ON BY DESIGNING POLITICIANS WHO SEEK TO
USE THEM FOR THEIR OWN PURPOSES, THEY HAVE ENTERED
THE POLITICAL ARENA WITH THE AVOWED PURPOSE OF DOMI
NATING THE POLITICS OF THE STATE IF THEY CAN AND
THROUGH POLITICS TO CONTROL THE STATE.
8. tt .
They do not dare to openly advocate tho repeal of tho laws that
they are now forced to obey, but they seek to politically annihilate tho
officials who enforce laws against them and to elect officials who will
follow a different course. They are putting it squarely up to tho peo
ple of tho state as to whether the saloons shall be allowed to run tho
politics of tho state or bo run out of the politics of tho state.
It would seem that they would have sense enough to bo quiet,
engaged ns they are in a business the moral influence of which is NOT
GOOD AT BEST, and to accept the reasonable and wholesome reg
ulations of tho laws they now so bitterly resent being enforced. They
do not seem to look at it that way, however. They have made it a
question as to whether they are GREATER THAN THE LAW
or tho law greater than they.
O
Army and Navy j
Should Keep Pace With
National Growth.
By WILLIAM II. TAFT, Secretary of War.
UGnT wo not in the six years between tho present and tho
completion of tho Panama canal to adopt a policy which
shall give us a merchant marine to justify our expendituro
of this enormous sum of money on commercial as well as
naval and war strategic grounds?
IS IT NOT OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE THAT, IN ORDER
THAT OUR INFLUENCE MAY BE FELT, WE SHOULD MAINTAIN A
NAVY AND ARMY COMMENSURATE WITH OUR RESOURCES, WITH
OUR COAST LINE, WITH THE EXTENT OF OUR COUNTRY AND
OUR POPULATION?
I do not say this in any jingo spirit.
No ono hates war oi tho prospect of it more than I do.
But I am confident that tho maintenance of our navy commen
surate with our resources and the reorganization of our army in such
a way as to permit its SPEEDY EXPANSION UNDER STRESS
will bo most useful to securo the CONTINUANCE of TIIE
PEACE under which we shall thrive and attain the highest aims o
