STATUS Ml
Dr. J. W. Ingram Gives Inter
esting Information Concern
ing Railway Work.
In a letter to D. W. Small, Dr. J.
W. Ingram, who left here a few days
ago for San Francisco to tako a post
graduate course at San Francisco,
gives many interesting facts con
cerning the. status of the work on
the proposed Drain-Coos Bay rail
way. Ho gathered some interesting
Information on the actual physical
developments of tho line, showing
how quickly the work can be accom
plished ns soon as E. H. Hnrriman
floats the $100,000,000 bond issue
which his directors authorized the
other day to build extensions and
Improve tho Harrlman lines.
In his letter to Mr. Small, Dr. In
gram says:
"I shall try to tell you what has
actually beon done on tho Drain
Coos Bay railroad.
' "At Scottsburg, where I spent my
first night out, I found out, thru Mr.
Heydon,' the grocer, that all talk of
early resumption of construction
work had been dropped and that all
supplies purchased last fall, especial
ly 1,500 pounds -of ham, 150 sacks
sugar, etc., had spoiled; however,
they have hundreds of barrels of ce
ment at Gardner and Scottsburg.
"There has been some work done
this past spring and no orders for
the immediate future, however, a
small mill ' on Elk Creek out about
four miles from Drain, is cutting ties
every day for .the Southern Pacific
which looks good, and they 'must
have several thousand already piled
up ready for use.
"The road is actually graded out
about three and a half miles, and
the trees cut down, but not cleared,
for another seven miles. They have
in about three or four concrete cul
verts and three large concrete brid
ges across Elk Creek completed, and
the track laid out for a distance of
2i& miles. They have still six or
seven more large concrete bridges to
construct between Drain and Scotts
burg. A Southern Pacific man at
Drain told me that long before sum
mer had passed they would be doing
business in earnest. How much he
know! I cannot tell.
"iWnay possibly return via Drain
just to note the progress."
DR. J. W. INGRAM.
