TELLS OF DEFEAT OF ANTL
SALOON LEAGUE IN COUNTRY.
Editor Coos Bay Times:
In the last month the Anti-Saloon
League has been defeated In Mary
land, New Jersey, New York State,
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Tho
probabilities are that It will bo over
whelmingly defeated In the near
future In Louisiana, Florida and per
haps In North Carolina.
One of tho most significant things
that has happened for spme time was
the admission by tho Rev. P. A.
Baker, National Superintendent of
the Anti-Saloon League, at Plain
field, N. J on April G, 1908, that
"the tone of tho press is changing."
Mr. Baker declared that newspapers
all over the country which have been
friendly are now turning against the
Anti-Saloon League. Ho accounted
for It by declaring that the liquor
merchants have bribed the news
papers. This Is an old charge and
has frightened many editors In the
past. But now it begins to look as
though the slander was losing Its ef
fect. In any case it Is Interesting to
know that Mr, Baker should feel It
necessary to recognize publicly the
change in tho tone of the press and
to try to account for It.
Lvt us beat them In Oregon. Let
us stop c'oslng business up and try
oper'ng It up instead. A MARSH
FIELD MERCHANT.
